Just looking for any advice in setting burns. Quail season ends at the end of Feb which means burn season starts. It’s always burned in sections so that what’s burned this year doesn’t get burned next year. And there’s always an unburned section on either side of the burns.

Where do you set? On the burn side of the break? Side unburned? Throughout the burn? As far as trails, there will be umpteen trails throughout a burned area, mainly deer trails. Just looking for someone’s experience, someone who’s been there done that.

I like to set right in the middle of the fire break.

A friend of mine would bed his trap and cover it , put grass or hay , straw on top of trap and set it on fire and nothing more ,,,,, they caught hundreds of foxes in the mid 70's before we had any yotes ,,,,,

Your situation is different I know but they get accustomed to finding unfortinate animals in these fire areas ,, makes a good set area for sure

Keep us posted

id think a charred mouse or bird would be a great atrractant either in form of cache or hidden bait set. the plus all the ash will be a excellent human scent block. A bucket full of weed ash instead of dry dirt or peat would be in order. Sounds like a great oppertunity to experiment

Caught 3 coyotes in the same trap in the remains of a burn pile in a clear cut a couple seasons ago. The area looked like a moonscape but there was coyote tracks and an area where they were scratching/digging. I put a trap there and picked up 3 in just over a week. There was several other burn pile locations and I checked them closely. That was the only one with activity.

the way farmers discard of dead animals here is to put them in dozer piles and burn them. So its a horse, cow or sheep roast for the predators. All things considered maybe that's where the attraction to smoke comes from.Humans have imprinted into there minds smoke means a potential meal
