What is the difference between a 3N and just a 3 dbls?

A true 3N has a 30 inch twist link chain with a heavy barrel swivel on and end and cast jaws that are barely offset.

A regular # 3 has a 14" or so twin-loop chain with a ring on the end and jaws that are not cast. Jaws can be regular or offset.

Over time parts get swapped out and rearranged so you can end up with a variety of combinations.

That is correct. The pan on a # 3 Victor double long is identical to the pan on a #3N Victor double long.

If you look at a parts list from Animal Trap Company (makers of Victor traps) from the 1970s and 1980s, the part number for those 2 pans is exactly the same.

Animal Trap Co. started making 3Ns in 1938. I am not sure when they quit making them.
The trap was supposedly a cross between a Newhouse and a Victor.. Hence the name 3N was coined....
A 4N was also made for a time but a lot less common..

Thanks, DiggerDale. I have been lucky and now have about 2 dozen 3Ns and a 4N. All are used on the line.
