How do you guys get that strong castor smell back out of dried castor? I usually mix it with some glycerin but never felt it regained that STRONG smell. Tips?

I cover with vodka and let them sit for couple weeks shake every so often then mix with glycerine until I get the consistency I want.

Dried castor is one of those sleeper ingredients that keeps on giving a sustained odor release in a formula. The amount that is used in a formula or how much hydration is given will continue to build over time. As stated grain alcohol will boost some odor as well as some other lower alcohol type materials. This is an area that may take some experimenting to get your desired results. Sandalwood oil is a good additive to powder castor as it is with authentic Ethiopian civet musk.

Wes you know what they say about taking a horse to get a drink of water. You can get him there but if he doesn't want to drink its up to you to make it happen.

I know I am a good trapper now its time to see if you are a good student. smile

I know you are Wes. If you get in front of most any animal and make a reasonable odor neutral presentation ( relating to equipment and set construction) you should get interest and results.

Too many trappers can go over board when using lures and baits. Early season you are dealing with a high percentage of recent graduates out on their own. Things seem pretty easy and routine in those beginning weeks. Down the road a couple of months things are learned, animal populations are diminished and you must adapt accordingly.

You have to realize once some animals has been exposed / conditioned to various types of odors, visual presentations and live to move on for another day all learn. Those that made it can become very wary of future circumstances/sets found that bear similar characteristics in their past travels.

They can all be caught if you fool them by using their natural behavioral instincts to your advantage.

Some just become breeding stock for next year also. LOL

This year has been the worst year for me ever. I’m not a pro or big numbers, but I average about 20 reds, 20 coyotes and 5 or 6 greys a year. This year, 1 yote, 2 greys and not a single red! It’s driving me nuts!

A few local trappers I have talked with in my shop have had similar experiences. Weather has played a big role in that outcome. Some fellas haven't got good anti freezing technique down yet and the weather has discouraged many trappers as well.

We seem to have many more trappers out this fall and winter as well. All these factors can impact your catch as compared to seasons passed. You only have x number of animals in any habitat.

There are many variables that can impact each seasons catch totals.
