My 330s are all out for wolverine and I found a real busy otter creek. Any one ever make snare poles for otter under the ice? You just tie a fish where you usually tie the green sticks? Any pictures would be great.

You think they will fight that long underwater Super Wide? I figure they will die rather quickly like beaver. I got no choice going to go for it Ill use a really thick willow might get some beaver also. Plus a safety wire just in case. I may also try a leg hold but Im getting low on those also. getting traps up here is stupid expensive, snares are light and cheep.

Muskrat I have caught quite a few otters on snarepoles under ice, some doubles.I do not bait the snarepole,I set it in a creek and fence both sides. If it is wide,I set two snarepoles side by side. This will cover a fairly wide creek. You can also set them off points where otter will cut the corner travelling with a bit of fencing to the outside as guidesticks. Not really necessary if you are at the right spot, but helps them tangle and not freeze to the bottom of the ice.A blind set.You can also set them in deep channels around old dead beaver houses but I find 330's better for that application. There is no damage on a snared animal under water/ice.There will be a faint white line on the skin like a snared under ice beaver.Make sure you have your cable cutters. When you get a double, there will be quite a tangle.

Boco: what type of tree do you use for the otter snare pole? I was thinking of using a green spruce tree so that the beaver would not chew it. A dry pole might break.

Our bottom edges are either frozen down or caved in Mewt we have 3’ of snow. But there are some dry creeks. Those use to be mink glory holes when I use to trap mink.

Man Boco your going to think I’m being difficult but I’m not. We did not have fires up here in the delta. Too wet, they have them outside the Delta.
But I am going to try to find something similar

So basically make a snare loop and add an extension made entirely out of swivels? The way i've seen otter roll in footholds, the swivel extension should work. Or you could put some short sections of chain in there. They will eat the wire they can reach.

Buy more 330s. Or better still buy some 280s.
Any dead pole will work It doesn't have to be fire killed spruce.

I’ll have to buy more 330 shipping is so expensive for them. More than the traps to get them from North Bay. Snares will be great if they work for me.

Newt, do you get much fur damage on otter snared on land? Just curious. I own your otter trapping book (plus your other snaring book and a bunch of DVDs) but it has been a long time since I read it. I wished I lived where we could snare other than beaver.

Heard a good report on your trapping and snaring school from a friend that went.

Mac
