There was a gal here in Minnesota that attempted to hang a young child and got probation. I will never understand our legal system.

I am glad the poachers were punished. I don't like the wording "the son killed the mother bear in front of her two cubs." The writer is intentionally humanizing the animals and making it sound like a crime to kill animals in proximity to related animals.

Well maybe ! The whole thing stinks big time to me.
It just does not seem likely to me that dad and spawn get in the truck and haul the boat a hundred miles south. Launch boat and motor into PWS. Put on the skis and just HAPPEN upon a bear in the hole.. Now MAYBE there were marks to show where she had been in and out but.....in my experience , mid-April iis a bit early for black bears to be out.
There is a hatchery on that island and tons of blackies all over the shoreline so I guess it's possible that it was just a random encounter.................but I think they KNEW where the den was Interesting hearing more detail on the area. Our bears here start popping out mid April the sows with Cubs tend to sleep longer and stay near the den longer. I would imagine up in your country they would have to sleep longer. There have been a few instances I know of where hunters here shot sows that have first year Cubs during our fall season. Rare but it happens the sow comes to bait ahead of her cubs. I believe if those hunters had patience, why would the sow leave the bait, the Cubs would certainly have come in. I do know those Cubs making it to September as they did will make the winter just fine. I know of road killed sows who's first year Cubs made it as well. I do believe there is a good chance the Cubs will be stunted, I saw it in two of them. There is a chance however that was genetic. Sad deal to read of these bums but it seems really odd, were they harvesting organs to sell? Osky

The area they were is is a much milder climate than I am in.......so it's possible the bear had been a bit active but still going back to the den.
But why go all that distance just to go skiing ? They could have skied right where they live . Boy oh boy, the more a guy learns about this fiasco the less sense it makes. Osky

Yep ! i have seen black bear dens in the lowlands along the river. Pretty darn easy to never know anything was there.
Fred Sims was a real outlaw, Ron Hayes and a few others around that same time period were just as bad. I knew of one who actually fled the country although I can't recall his name at the moment. Whoever the guy is that fled the country must have been pretty bad.
