All, but especially bama trappers

Considering that otter is required to be tagged by fish and game within 14 days of catch, and has a defined season of Oct-Feb, what do you do if you inadvertently catch one in a beaver set outside of the defined season? Traps are indiscriminant after all...

I've been researching sets for beaver that discourage otter, but they both seem to be inhabiting the same areas.

Thanks.

Check your regs. They probably address incidental catches during the off season.

I don't think you are. I looked through yours and your regs are nowhere near so detailed as what we have here in Maine. Safest thing would be to call your DNR and get a wardens take on it.

Maine spells it out...Incidental Catch of Mink and Otter:
Although it is not permitted to trap for mink or otter after the general trapping season closes, trappers may keep a mink or otter if caught by accident during the beaver trapping season.

Here in Iowa I catch lots of Otter during Beaver Season. I just call my DNR Officer and they come pick it up everytime.Very Convenient.

Hey Chris, in NY we are legally required to modify our large body grips in areas where otters are closed. Google NYS DEC otter/beaver trapping and you should find it. By sliding the triggers off to the side, it generally allows otters to pass through but gets the beavers. Be aware that you'll get more hip caught beavers this way though.

yea I've been researching limiting otter in the 330s.. I'd rather not get otter if it can be helped. I'll look up what NYS says in the regs..
