Pulled last of my sets today,I had tracks go up to my flat /post set about 3 feet away, coyote stop and moved a bit then continued on his way. Hadn't added any lure or urine in 3 weeks, was the scent to far gone to peak his interest ? Any tips to make a urine post set or flat set more productive ? Set had been remade from a opossum 3 weeks earlier, is that a factor ? -Thanks

Three weeks here would mean about 3” of rain and 3” of snow on top of that. Maybe didn’t smell anything to keep him interested?

A. You could relure the set. Or
B. You could put your trap where the coyote showed you he was willing to stand

This came up at the NJ snaring school a couple weeks ago. One of the students brought up something similar. Ron Jones got us all to see that the coyote was telling us where to set by where it stood in relation to, in this case, where the bait was located.

This was literally thinking outside the box for me. Until the school and hearing from people who made their living taking easy and hard to catch critters, I never would have considered moving my trap back.

It's what coyotes do. There Is no way you can dictate where a coyote Is going to step. Once you think you have It figured out they will step somewhere else.
You can cut down your odds with guiding blending and lure placement but nothing Is 100% carved I stone. If we had It figured out there wouldn't be any coyotes to trap. LOL

A good trapper is a good student
Coyote is always the teacher

Like elk hunting ,,a elk might not be as smart as you ,,,but you kill more if you think they are...

After the possum catch you must have had a really plain catch circle and a lot of possum stink? So, my question is how did you get that to look natural and smell like a single scent again?

I usually end up with a trash pile remake, but some times can work a hole set of some variety; but I have never had the imagination to remake a catch circle into a scent post, or been able to blend one. If I want a flat set I have to move it over few feet.

Coyote trapping is a percantage game and it varies depending on your skill and animal population. That percantage is never a 3 digit #.

The opossum didn't tear up the area much if at all, the set was on a outside fence corner and after he got pinched he went through the fence and got stuck behind the fence on a short chain, so there was no real catch circle.

Tough to say. Each coyote is an individual. They all share some similar traits but you never know when you have a stupid pup run right in or some super wired up freak that's seen it all walk past. Maybe it just wasn't too interested?

I like Beav's answer.
