Good practice of habit Bruce. Once you use these volumes frequently they will become part of your mental library. Until you get them down as muscle memory it is a good habit to make reference to them when in doubt to help reduce errors. A miss calculation of measurement can make a big difference in just a few drops to a couple of milliliters of a product in a formula

At some point you may find that you need to start one for grams to ounces. Milliliters to Liters.

Working with Civet musk paste, deer musk grains or zinc valerate can get fairly precise in weights and measures. If you don't work with them it wont matter much. Some folks I think just work with easy to use weights and volumes. Some of the expensive materials only require smaller gram weights to achieve a 1%, 5% or greater in active ingredient percentages in a tincture for example.

I bet some don't realize that volume measurement does not always equal weight measurement. Liquids are generally measured in ounces of volume then there are containers and materials sold by the weight of the material.

A weighted ounce and a bottled volume ounce are not always equal.

There are measures of weight and there are measures of volume. It can be a bit confusing if you don't have the need to know the difference.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to remember that when using 1 ounce by volume it is the volume of one ounce of distilled water. Or in other words if you weigh 128 ounces of distilled water its volume will be one gallon. Of course temperature will effect that . If you weigh out 128 ounces of distilled water then heat it to just below boiling, say 205F , it will have a greater volume than it will at just above freezing, say 35F. So if your using volume measurements you should try and measure at close to the same temperature every time. I seriously doubt 20-30 degrees F will make much difference but if your going to add something to a mixture out in the barn when its 10 below but you did your mixing at 92 when working up proper ratios, you might add too much if you measure by volume.

I measure with my nose a lot. Natural stuff whether its from a plant or an animal is not real consistent. I put something together and give it a week or a few months. Then sometimes add a little more of something. I am especially careful with asafetida tincture and beaver castor. Both those smells have a tendency to get stronger over time. I like to mix in a little less and use my nose to get the smell Im looking for.

My point was to state that there are units of volume and units of weight.

Volume measurement is the amount of space that the material occupies.
Volume of weight is how much the material actually weighs on a scale.

When working with formulas it many times requires the understanding of the varying elements that may be used in both volume and weight measurements at times for the ingredients.

The important aspect is keeping which ever method that you incorporate consistent.

64 drops=1/2 teaspoon

Our gallons of meat bait weigh between 8 >9 # per gallon. This is ground meat beaver, bobcat and Egg base baits. Maybe our meats are heavier in density then others. ? Half a gallon would be around 4 # or so.
