Grrrr! I recently moved over onto a new property and there is one or more grey fox that WON'T GET CAUGHT! It's not that they don't come to my sets, they just step everywhere but where the pan is! It's not just with the grey fox though, everyday I have one or multiple sets visited by different species. They grey fox seem to be visiting my sets most, just they seem to know where the pan is. For coyote I'm setting roughly 9" back, 3" over and for grey fox almost as close as I can get. What pan tension do y'all use on grey fox?
I appreciate the help!

Anthony Asher.

Use subtle blocking. Just rough up the surounding area a little and put a fake track on your pan. And guard the loose jaw

Block the snot out of them. Make sure it's something they can't stand on. rocks and logs are a waste if time. Think punji sticks for guiding Grey's .

Ive experienced your pain until I used heavy guiding.....jaw as close to the dirt hole as possible.......I've caught them on super light pan tension and whatever the 550s are out of the box

You could always try a well blended flat set or grab and pull type set. If it's blended well both should work fine. I'd have the trap about 6" back on center.

Thanks for the advice. I tried heavy blocking but it (or they) seem to completely avoid that set. It was a cubby.

I don't like to guide them. I pin the bait, set the trap a foot back and try for the back foot.
But I march to a different drummer

I would put a few small foot guides around the set, and do what you can to keep the animal there the longest ( make it tough to get the bait/lure). Like everyone else said, their luck will run out eventually if they are working your sets.

Put in a step down dirt hole set. That will eliminate the problem. Sharpen your knife.

Exactly. I've caught more yotes and greys than you can stack in a truck. Only sets I ever use are step down dirt hole or pee post. If you make a regular dirt hole make sure your pan is slightly lower than everything else around it also. Good luck.

Step down set? What's that? I always my the spot over the pan the lowest spot if that is what you mean.

It is much more of a step than that. Best advice I can give you is to get Russ Carmans "Foxes by the hundreds". It is explained with pics in that book better than I can try to tell you. It is the best "in my opinion" fox set you can use. Basically fool proof. There may be some youtube videos around also. Practice this set at home this summer and let everyone know how you make out next year. If you ever get a chance at a convention where Phil Brown is giving a demo don't miss it.

Good luck
