Well If It works for you that's all that counts.
But if your having those problems when fleshing on a wood beam then It seems to me the angle of your fleshing knife Is wrong.

If and when I flesh a grinner I'll lay It on top of the beam so one layer of hide Is cushioning the side I'm working. But I only do that on those super thin skinned grinners. So I can see what your getting at. But I'm still going to stick with most of the problem being the angle of your knife. The flatter your knife the less pressure you creating against that hide.

What's your thinking on that, Beav? You've probably seen this video. I'm nowhere near as fast as this guy but I like the result.

Fleshing On a beam Is In my opinion Is a lot faster. I use to do that fleshing over my knee I would never go back to that system.
If your going to flesh like that you might just as well be clean skinning to begin with. It's the same principal.

These flicks are made to look easy because the guy has perfected that system. And It probably took him 1000s of beaver and 1000s of hours to get It right.
I think the time spent leaning a new way would be better spent perfecting the system you use now.

It took me lots of time and beavers to get the beam scrapping down pat. But know It's about a 10 to 12 min job on the largest beaver.

But no reason why you shouldn't give It a try you might just be a natural at It. But If you can't keep a knife sharp your going to fail.

im young in comparison to a lot of you but the over my leg fleshing came natural! I even did a few skunks that way. I always knock a hole in them on the beam! But I still have miles of learning to do on fleshing

Fleshing on your knee is the way all the old timers(those that didn't clean skin) and the Indians handled their beaver.(and lots of other fur).
Fur was put up at the trap camp and no one had any fancy tools, beams and stuff like that.Just a knife and a stone to sharpen it and your good to go.I have put up plenty of fur at the cabin and you don't need a bunch of extra stuff to do a real nice job.
I am a believer in keeping things simple.I seen lots of fur come out of the bush that makes the stuff today look like garbage.

Seems like nowadays everyone wants to make stuff(including trapping) way too complicated.maybe its just so they can sell more stuff, lol.

Make things complicated? Maybe It's about moving ahead and doing It more efficient. .

Well Boco I can't see sitting down next to my beam In my heated fur shed and work a beaver hide over my knee. Most of us aren't sitting In some lean-to putting up beaver.
