Charles Dobbins, in Variations of the Flat Set, describes a roller set-post set in which he stakes down a piece of fur with a lure that incourages rolling with a post set in close proximity to it. This set is said to take advantage of the canines urge to urinate after it rolls on something. Is this trap set to try and accomplish a hind foot catch, when the coyote hikes its leg to pee, or is it still going for a front foot catch? How should the trap placement be at the post? It seems that normal trap placement would be in the wrong spot to catch a coyote urinating. This set was brought up in the lure formulaters forum, and I started thinking about it again.

Depends on whether you like to catch the yote when he smells the post or when he pees on it.

I typically set that post set thinking of catching that coyote on his way in , just before he cocks his leg. After watching my little male dog mark everything in sight since last summer I’ve changed my ways. Every urine post I’ve made has been more of a walk through ! Urine on one side, gland on the other . Has it helped my catch rate ? NO ! I realize my little Jagd might be wired a little tighter than a coyote ( about five time tighter ) but I’ve been watching his a approach and his mounted or cocked positions and he’s rarely done the same thing twice . From what I’ve seen the best placement of a trap would be at the 4 : o’clock or 8: o’clock position, at least if I was trying to catch Sammy ! ! !

Comparing the way a confident dog like a jagd and a timid creature like a coyote will only help you so much .

From my observations most coyotes even males approach a scent post more like a female dog than a classic hiked leg of a confident male .dog

Big foot, are you saying a male coyote squats like a female dog?

That would explain the hind foot catches. My trap placement is usually centered and close to my attracter.

I have yet to get a picture of a male coyote marking in the classic dog style with back legs rigidly perpendicular back straight and more importantly for trapping the fromt and back feet almost the lenght of the body apart. Usualy they kind of crouch the off leg might hover a little but the front and back foot are close together in front of post

Remember half your targets are females and it might be one reason a short post that they can hover over is more prodctive than a tall one

I'm by far an expert but have a lot of dogs. If you ever watch the males hike on something, they put their back legs very close to what they're peeing on but first the front paws go there before the back legs. I set my traps accordingly but have no idea if male fox or coyotes hike or squat...

Combining these two posts is food for thought, and some experimenting.

WE Here In WI can't stake down any fur so It's visible from the sky. But I do place my LDC lure about 4 or so feet from the set. Normally I can find a tuft of grass close by and I just smear a bit of lure on that grass tuft. I do the same with urine when I place It but most times It's going to be closer to the actual set.

I make my scent post type sets as walkthroughs and get about 50/50 front foot / rear foot catches. I really don't care what foot gets caught they will all be there in the morning. There are tons of trail cam videos on YouTube of coyotes. Not all coyote clips show a coyote marking, but many do, and they all seem to squat. If I have the set made targeting coyotes and get a red fox they are almost 100% rear foot catches, even the big males.
