I'm trapping beavers on a large lake that are enjoying my clients hedges. I caught 6 so far and I'm sure I'm down to the last one. He has been seen swimming around and will slap his tail at the neighbors.
He is attacking a certain hedge. I have cattle panels all around the grass side of the hedge with traps. But he has now decided to walk up the boat ramp and attack the hedge from the concrete side.
Has anyone used barrier fence? cattle panels are tough to drive into concrete. LOL
I might try to use the panels but will anchor with cinder blocks and force him into an awaiting trap or two. His downfall is. He keeps coming back to the same hedge, but not every night. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Sarge

Possible ideas:
Hunt it with a .22 (if not too urban).
Use a float set near the boat landing.
Set a foothold, or maybe a cage trap, by the hedge.
Take some of that hedge material and tie a bundle of it down by the water on a snare mounted to several concrete blocks.
Try to hone in on where it's denning up.

Hello AJE, the first two ideas are becoming a real possibility. Except shotgun only. I need to employ the float set into my trapping arsenal. The beaver is too smart for his own good. His hungry for those particular hedges will be his downfall. Sarge

Another idea: set a foothold where he's exiting the boat ramp.

Coni's are out of the question, owner is concerned over his neighbors(several) of their dogs wondering onto his property.
Wished I could pinpoint where he is entering and exiting. There isn't a set pattern with him. it seems he enters and exits wherever he feels like. Now he is coming up the boat ramp. The hedge is about 25 yards from the water. Sarge

Interesting that you are referring to the problem beaver as him. Did you make note of the relative weights of the ones you have caught? How about the sex of the ones caught?

I would almost bet that you are now dealing with mama who is getting more educated and harder to catch by the day. A well placed blind set is your best bet but for that to work, you have to figure out where she is moving.

Put on your waders and make a square cage with wire 4x4x4 in 3 feet of water. Have a entrance on the bottom of the lake blocked with a 330. Their favourite hedge in the middle. When you set the 330 put a plastic pop in the springs tied with string, this will float up so you can see your catch effort is rewarded.
Out of sight out of mind. No lure cause you don't want some lab swimming out to it.

I refer to him as him. I have already caught a large female. Maybe it is a Sheila. We have placed chicken wire across the boat ramp and the other bushes gravitating toward the footholds. We'll see what his/her next move is. I will be putting in a float Tuesday with a little Woodchipper and his favorite hedge pieces. Either way, if it continues hanging around, it will die. Don't use lure around dogs that swim , especial labs and mutts that like to roll and make themselves small pretty.

Trapping around lakefront homes is always challenging. Lots of varibles. With pets being the major player. With the shoreline lined with riprap. It makes it hard to figure where they are coming or going. Even if the lake is down and all you have is a sandy stretch. These beaver rarely take the same trail entrance and exit.
I was wondering if silt type fencing would work. Lugging fence panels and placing them 30-50 yards across some ones yard is very time consuming. Sarge

Electric fences sure gets their attention being that they are wet when they come out of the water.

Had the exact same deal. One of Kirk Dekalb's guillotine door traps tucked against the wall of the ramp at the waterline and some driftwood log blocking funneled them right in.
I assume by description you have good seawall. I've also done bottom edge sets with cages, snares and 330s along seawalls. Those double doors work just as well on land as trail sets along fencing or along hedges.

No seawall to use as a guide. Only way to guide or block is to use panels or chicken wire as we have done. Without it, the beavers can and do come and go anyway they want. The homeowners check daily for me(per agreement), haven't heard anything in a couple of days. Sarge

Dale, I had similar set up in an HOA a few yrs ago and used 2 of the 330 floats out away from the dock and floating log set with snares

Setup a couple cameras to see exactly what is happening.

Update, after using chicken wire for guiding and also the lake is returning back to normal pool stage(they lowered it in anticipation of all the rain). He has not returned to my customers yard. I'm thinking with the lake filling back up, he has other opportunities. The lake is several thousand of acres. Sarge

330 floats work in ponds too, gota either have steady breeze to keep oriented
OR
shove it into some weeds/reeds--(330 facing out)--put mud on the shelf and castorium or BeavRcat or sac oil on the mud pile.
