Although I don't have the space to set up and do this, the question is.....how much value is added to a fur if done correctly vs green? Assuming all fur is the same quality, clean of burrs, dirt, blood, etc.
Apples to apples. Mostly coyotes and coon.
Example, $40 coyote green = $___ fleshed and dried.
Same for coon. Please include beaver, otter if you have an opinion.
All you fur buyers please chime in.
Thanks.

I asked my buyer that very question. I averaged $85 on 10 coyotes, asked him what they were worth if on the carcass. He said $50, so paid me $35 to put them up. I think that is worth my time. I didn't ask about coons, although I averaged $13 on mine. Two groups ahead of me were selling carcass coon for a $3 average. I'll put them up for $10. I enjoy the put up and feel the hard work is done once you catch them.

Grease coon versus put up coon I'm betting about a $3.00 difference. And sometimes a put up coon will show some of the flaws that a grease coon won't.

That's the problem with not putting them up.They cant be evaluated as well so the buyer takes this into account and assumes that your non finished fur will have some defects. They have to do it that way or they would be out of business quick.

I’ve seen carcass beaver go for 50% of finished price. Skinned (grease) beaver go for about $8 (or more) difference from finished skins. You be the judge. This year we got about $6.50 on 60-inch average beavers. I’m not a big fan of scraping and boarding beaver so I’ll take $6.50 for skinning and let the dealer get carpal tunnel when he scapes.

I sold about 60 greased coon for $6. After seeing a lot of the sale results this February I didn't think $6 was bad. Finishing some now so I'll find out soon if it was the way to go.

Our local buyer pays a 2$ difference. Not really worth the additional work for 2$’s but when you really like doing it, it becomes fun.

2$ difference on coon
1$ difference on grey fox
2$ difference on red fox

I think it's difficult to compare apples to apples because different animal species will do much better put up versus green and this too can vary from year to year depending on what the market demand is. For example, you could sell a carcass beaver right now in the country for about as much as you would average on a put up pelt because of the value of the castor in the carcass beaver. This maybe wasn't the case 3 or 4 years ago because castor wasn't worth quite as much and there was still somewhat of a market for beaver pelts (other than by the pound hatter market). However, if you're willing to put the work in to finish the beaver and find markets for the pelt, castor, sac oil, skull, tail, and meat, you'll come out much farther ahead. I sold my finished fall beaver pelts for $10/pound. That same buyer was paying $7/ pelt green. I'll also make an additional $5-$10 per beaver on castor, a buck each for the tail and skull, and a bit on the sac oil. Plus I have marten/fisher/bobcat bait. In this case, it's much more advantageous for me to piece the beaver out and sell the pelt finished.
Then there's the debate on selling finished fur to a country buyer or sending it to the international fur auctions. You'll find about 100 threads on Tman about that debate. It's nice to have both options and there are years when one is a better option than the other. It seems that a few years ago when the market was hot, a guy would do considerably better putting up fur and sending it north. The last few years during a low market, the profit margin is much smaller for putting up your own fur. So, long story long it's very hard to "apples to apples" because every species is different and every year is different in regards to the market.

I don't have a big freezer so.i put up everything. I use meat for bait and sell castor and don't pay the electric bill for that freezer. I do my put up in spare time when I could be watching TV or something and I don't make anything for doing that stuff. Just what I do....I know guys that trap and don't ever put up anything. Good on them.....

Wish I had more time to trap....

Thanks guys. Maybe others will still give an opinion.
I'm just having a hard time wrapping my head around the same price for winter coyotes vs November coyotes. Dec-Jan ones looked more heavily furred to me. But I have had no training in identifying the differences. Yeah, more guards hairs, three layers of fur, color sometimes. I'd like need to go to another coyote skinning-fur quality demonstration and ask more questions.

December-January pelts. All cleaned, washed of blood, burrs, etc. Combed out. I can tell up close they're not all equal.

Ok, how do you rotate when pics insert 90° out of position? That's why I tried to edit.
