Just curious why there are 12 pages of heavy, 4 pages of semi and 3 pages of eastern? I was thinking that heavy coyotes are harder to come by in the lower 48 than any other type so why are there greater numbers of them? Does Canada way out produce the US when it comes to heavy coyotes? It seems there are way more trappers on this site that would catch more of the semi or eastern type coyotes? My handful of South Dakota coyotes graded 37% heavy. Thanks for your thoughts!

It's a lot harder to produce a lot of coyotes in the east. The number of guys that can produce 50+ coyotes a year aren't very high.

I just sold some the other day, and the buyer told me heavies are hard to come by in my area. out of the 20 I skinned I had maybe 2 or 3... the rest I would call semi.

I thought that weird also, I would have thought there would be twice the eastern and semis than heavies.

Another thing is that in the east, there a lot of coyotes that aren't skinnable for various reasons.

I might skin 1/2 of the ones I catch and that still includes a few I should have culled.

Mine went 50/50 this year, usually it's more like 35. I think western trappers just have a lot bigger areas to trap resulting in bigger numbers. It was a huge adjustment for me when I first started trapping in Wyoming, everything was so BIG, where do I put traps!!!!! Mange has also tapered off here, skinned over 80% this year, a few years ago it was around 35%

I was looking at the catalog and thinking similar thoughts.

Nafa's offering is the exact opposite of the Natural coyote distribution.

But I just think that represents tough times, and trying to generate as much revenue as possible, during the one main opportunity of the year to sell something in demand.

Maybe trappers are listening to NAFA and shipping decent fur again instead of trying to unload scrap.

It is possible that NAFA is focused on selling heavy coyotes because that is the hot market. They might be holding some of the Easterns and low grades for the May sale, when they will be able to put together a better assortment of the less desirable fur.

If so, it isn't the first time NAFA has done this. It is not unusual for them to offer limited selections at the first sale.

We'll many trappers in the eastern half of the country ( including myself ) are having a awful season. Also not a lot catch big numbers either in the eastern sections

With prices so high I would think you have much more time/effort being put in by the folks that have the numbers as well as quality

This along with other factors mentioned may have something to do with it

And with a potential shortage for manufactures the prices may rise for semi heavies held back

Just my thoughts

If this was true, there would be a lot of people on t-man posting about their fur not in the catalog. I'm with Marty. They are fudging the grade.
