Well I finally went ahead and did it. I have some used Fryer oil that has been spiked with fish that has marinating for several years. I use some every year but I had enough left over to cover a dozen DPs. My thoughts are that the oil will work as a great lubricant and as an additional smell to the entire trap.

Has anyone else done this?

Probably will catch every grinner within 10 miles.

Post season = time to experiment.

Down here you’d have an entire bed of ants covering the trap by morning.

I like the idea but two things scare me! The grease souring and having to use guantlets to set your coon line . In fear of contaminating all other sets . and gear riding to and fro. but it would keep your dps in pristine condition so long as not a lot of burnt batter was in the grease. My oppies would be lined up like ants! Hey but oppies need thinned out as well! The worst nest predators beside a skunk. I'd have a lot of dps knocked over and my yotes smelling like a stale long john silvers. But I find the idea interesting keep us posted

I've done it. They get kind of sticky but it works. No ants up here during trapping season. We're far more worried about ice and snow.

I didn't have any pullout issues. The oil dries up pretty stiff actually. I went back to tossing them in the rat trap wax bucket....but it worked decent. Super easy and fast.

Depending on where you got the cooking oil, it may have a variety of salts in it and when exposed to the atmosphere and moisture it may start to rust a little faster than normal. Wax or paint or dye or oil will last for (until) the first coon. After that most coatings I have tried are part of the landscape. It will do its job on fixing a coon's attention on the smell so use it and share any reports.

Hi Greenbay I got to hand it to you for an out of the box idea. I'd bet a taco though after messing with that mess a bit you will be finding a whole lot easier ways to catch that truck load of raccoons with your DP's.

I did this one a few years ago and I won’t do it again. Why I did what did all my dps in the fryer oil, then store in a bucket for about 8 months until season started. After that amount of time the oil had turned gummy and sticky and the traps were a mess. I ended up boiling the oil off and don’t do anything to the traps besides clean then at end of season before storage.

I would think the coon would handle the outside of the trap some, I want them to concentrate on the inside.

I am planning on having something completely different on the inside. Oil to draw them food to commit.

Well, the results are in --- horrible idea. They catch just fine nothing pulled out but they become very sticky over time. Yesterday I began to try and clean them off. Boiled them, steel wool, boiled again yet the chains remain sticky. Today I sprayed them with oven cleaner and will hit them with the hose later.

My advice would be not to try this but live and learn.

Oven cleaner did a good job.

Thanks for not rubbing it in ADC!

Thanks for the info,. It has been said that a smart man learns from his mistakes ...
and that a genius learns from everyone’s mistakes. Seems like you’re a good sport about it.
I sincerely appreciate that.
