Continued from page 46. Marten are still nice with full coverage on the guard hair and white leather but that won’t last too much longer. Lynx are nice and silver now. Wolverine going to start losing hair on their legs and rump soon. Trapping days are limited from now until seasons end. Then I’ll decide if my skidoo is up to some wolf hunting. Never fails that the animals visit and dance all over the buried traps.

I’ll have to get some pictures up soon. Just pics I’ve taken this season. Not a lot but still a few good ones. I had a very proud day as a trapping father this past Friday. I had taken my kids out earlier in the week and I got Morgan to set two snares. I checked them before leaving to camp on Friday and was pretty excited to see that she had snared her first lynx! I couldn’t stop smiling all the way to camp where I picked up 10 lynx, 4 Marten, 14 mink, 5 weasels, 3 squirrels, and 2 whiskeyjacks. Missed a couple wolverine that didn’t feel like sticking their head in a box. I felt a little tired yesterday but Fiona was home from work not feeling well and she mentioned that we could use a moose right about now. So I went out looking and shot the 5th moose I seen. It’s been a lucky few days. I have no problem with sitting inside today but who knows. I might just have to go and check for the wolves that have their own dead moose out towards mackenzie river.

Morgan was at her grandparents for movie night when I picked up her first Lynx. I made her a few snares of her own too. 1/16 for now. Holding a wolverine isn't much of a concern where I bring the kids so she won't need anything stronger yet. I think I'll take the two oldest out later on to set more snares.

I used an iPad to take pictures of my camera screen. Saves me an hour and a half of setting up my old desk top and saving them to a USB then setting up my old laptop to transfer them, etc. Normally the fish would be chopped with an axe but I had just a few fish at the start of the season and sawing them spread the bait further. Pre baiting at night saves me precious daylight in dark winter.

Nice weather but no help to trapping conditions. The water in the pictures is over a foot deep. Just below a beaver dam. One narrow strip of the skidoo trail was fairly solid so I used the boggan to get to shore and grab a few arm loads of willow. Then I used the boggan to get to the right ski and jam some bigger sticks under. Then I tilted the machine towards the deeper water to the right and stuck the willows under the track to use leverage to Lift it out. The weather had cooled off a lot by this point and the trail was slowly freezing so I managed to inch the front end over. Lots of packing snow into the water and letting it freeze. Was I ever happy to get out and back onto a solid trail. Took long but I stayed dry. I probably wouldn’t have gotten stuck in the first place but I stopped and just kind of fell off the trail to the right. Grabbing throttle at that point would’ve just gotten me stuck worst. Should’ve took before pictures but at the time it didn’t look too likely that I’d be taking an after picture anytime soon.

This was how I pulled into camp one cold day. I just had to lean a little to the right until I sewed it back up. Moose tracks in the cabin yard.

Same Marten. Just a beautiful sight even without the good scenery.

Most of this weekend catch. I’d trade those mink for a couple more Martin but I’ll take what I get. And I just had to throw in a selfie.

I behave myself these days boco so those are the remains of my old horns that are shinking. It’s just frost. Bronco- I’ll jump right in the water if I know it will get me out quickly but if I’m going to be there for awhile I’ll do anything to stay dry. Marten trapper-2 of those mink were in 330s set for wolverine and the rest are from Marten boxes on trees Smalltime- I couldn’t stop smiling all day after Morgan connected. Overflow is even more of a drag when it’s stink lake water. All the more reason to stay dry.

I’ve been catching the mink like this. Even in boxes with the trap facing upwards.

I picked up these two the morning after setting 21 boxes through an overland trail I made. I thought I might’ve hit the mother lode but I only caught about 10 more before pulling that line. Now it’s my wood trail
