This was fully submerged today in my 150 BG. What do you think damaged the face like this? Is this enough damage to where I should throw it out, basically maybe make fisher or yote bait out of it?

They don’t pay for faces as I recall.

If you are using wood I’d just pin it is as close to normal shape as I could and not worry too much. Wire might be a little tougher to get it right....

LOts of critters can do that. It could have been crayfish working On the face. Or even turtles IT's been pretty warm and turtles are still out and about.

Ok, maybe I can try to salvage it.
I've trapped 10 so far in this spot, and this was the only 1 with any damage.

Have seen a lot of this before....everything mentioned so far but will add bluegills and other small fish. Yes, small bites but over several hours...lots of damage can be done.

And yes that could be another cause of the damage.

At that same spot, I had another muskrat yesterday where there's some chewing...this time a little on the top of the head. I think I'll try to sell it, too. 2 of the 17 rats I've got in that spot have had that issue. Whatever it is, it seems to like the face area of the rats.
If it's a mink doing the chewing, I got this dandy yesterday. [Linked Image]

That damage was nothing compared to what I witnessed last night when I found this on the 1st trap I checked...

[Linked Image]

Something tried dragging the trap away and only left the head.

Defiently a big mink and with today's prices tan it as a story piece it's just not worth trying to put up.

Yesterday I had an interesting situation, this time involving a beaver. I'm now trapping a very large private pond. I got an under ice beaver yesterday & 1 eye was chewed out, and a small bite was taken from the nose. I don't foresee me suffering any significant deduction for it, but it was surprising given the setting in which I trapped this. I reset. Hopefully it's not otter (I already filled my otter tag). I wouldn't expect a mink in this spot. There'a a little open h2o but it's on the other end of the pond. Hopefully no more damage.

It's too bad mink prices are so lousy. I got another 1 yesterday but not this big. I suppose us trappers can't compete with the ranch mink industry (not that they are necessarily thriving).

Water shrew Sorex palastrus swims under water and gets air pockets for breathing. If you see mouse tracks in the cattails it is probably them above ground. They do like meat over their normal insect food. Their distribution is well past the Twin citys and east of there into Wisc. They can be up to closed fist size.
