Get them in the sun! Mold wont hardly grow where sun is hitting it for majority of the day. Your sun must not be putting out a lot of heat yet. After a month I usually have a slight oil slick developing.I noticed my jars are starting to work again.

Right after our spring season closes I put my tails out for some sun, it closes April 15. Chop up, jar them , and put right in the sun. I put my jars in a cage to , wild cats, coons, and loose dogs knock the jars over here

Let me sugar coat this

I put the cut up tails in a black 5gal bucket with a lid and line for the gas to get out . I started last year and take the oil off the top and now I got the same bucket out for the sun to work on it again. will be some time before I will take more oil off. I did use a jar at first but found that the bucket works ok also.

Smaller containers will cook off faster unless you have a good solar or artificial heat source.

ive found painting my gallon jars flat black.Throws my rendering process into turbo. I leave a inch or so unpainted at the top for a inspection window. I wont open any jars till its time to draw oil. Started 10 gallons of spoon bill this past weekend. Its already got a tiny oil slick developing. I gave up on buckets I was getting to much condensation causing excess water in my materials. Additional water in beaver tails adds another year on rendering

I found the dark blue buckets are perfect for this, and use white for bait tainting, etc.

for some reason I don't get condensation, I guess

Missouri has very high humidity in the summer! its not uncommon to have 100 degree days with 90 percent humidity. followed by a 60 degree nite with 90percent humidity that's were I think the problem arises. The larger mass of product cant cool down quick enough and causes internal condensation. Even my jars sweat a little on the inside, but not enough to water down the final product

I've used 2.5 gallon black plastic buckets in the past for BTO but do not have them anymore but I have a bunch of gallon glass jars. Can I use them with out a vent or will they blow up if I put the lid on and
I do not vent them? Thanks for any info...d2

I diced mine into sheetrock plaster pails, so...4.3 gallon pails at 2/3rds full once they start to work, and I wrapped them in black plastic garbage bags and set them in my green house. It seems to work. I have another 150 plus tails to dice into a few more buckets.

d 2 I don't vent my bto jars they only gas hard for the first week I just burp them every other day till oil starts forming after that my lids stay loose just tight enough wind cant blow them off. Les you can fill your bto container full tainting the product swells. Rendering your product should be shrinking, And for the record buckets can a do work I just prefer glass jars

Oh yeah, I do stretch a paint rag over my pail before I snap lid down. Flies will lay eggs around the rim, but a maggot cannot get through the barrier.

Tony, I fill my pails up pretty good. They are now 2/3 full at best after continued rendering.

in all the time ive made bto flys have never ruined a batch. They buz around but rarely land on the containers! Like a dummy I forgot to put a lid on a container it went 2 days open and no flys ! Glad it didn't rain! So now ive been putting this fly theory to the test. Unless misery flys are different. I have one gallon jar the air stone rotted off the lid, 1/8 hole is wide open thru the whole process with no fly activety inside the jar. I set a bucket over it if rain is in the forecast.I hardly ever worry about flys once I see a black oil layer start.Maybe im just lucky

What is BTO used in?? Would it be good for adding to canine bait?

Would there be any benefit to adding a couple of oil sacs or castor's to the mix ? Going to give rendering a couple of jars full of tails a try.

cant really see that it would hurt or help the final product. Bto is a pretty dominate smell. And not the smell you think it will be. Deep musky kind of smoky smell thats very premiating. Skunk escence gives it a nice wake up call

my go to is1/2 tsp per pint then let it age a few weeks that gives it a nice subtle hint of skunk not a nose burning smell
