I realize a lot of you don’t want your traps seen on public land, but I trap private land. To keep my traps from being run over or parked on I was going to use the surveyors flags they use to mark lines with. Had a choice between white and orange. What are the thoughts on whether they’ll spook a coyote or other predators? These are the little white flags you just stick in the ground.

Putting flags on the ground would leave your sent on the ground and may spook the coyotes with the low movement of the flag. Using trappers tape up high would work better and is easier to see. Coyotes are not drawn to things that are up high like bobcats are.

Depending upon the terrain I use golden rod stems with tops to mark predator sets in open pasture, fields or prairie country typically. They stand tall and are quite visible in snow. When in cover slight marker flagging can do the trick in the rocks and heavy cover. I don't like flagging in public ground areas. You will experience too much interference and theft.

You should learn to recognize your sets with subtle markers. Too obvious markers will lead to curiosity of others too much. You can make mental notes or field notes in a journal as well until you catch on how to find your sets.

I know where all my sets are, I want the manager and workers to know where they are.
I may end up looking for some cane to cut and put up. Don’t really set near trees or heavy brush. This is a quail plantation, more open pines with Wiregrass and Broomsedge.
Only trapping the areas as they burn to eliminate too much activity although most of the critters are used to it, even the predators.

I use survyors flags, some as close as 6' from the set and never seems to be problematic for me. I tell the landowners that my set is usually within 20' of the flag. Seems to work well for me.

A beaver peeled stick, plastic pipe, bamboo or a lath would be pretty easy to use and obvious to the workers. Just set them in a stake made hole as part of the backing. Let them be head high so easy to see above the weeds and grass.

Use something that will not be know easy to see but you are the one that knows it is marker. the flagging that is talk about stand out to easy for anyone to want to check it out use something that dose not and just need to mark the area the set is on a limb or anything that is not far from the set .In the tree or brush or top of weed not far from the set. For how I mark my sets they do not stand out but I can find them in the daytime nd in the dark whe shine a light on it.

I WANT mine seen, lol. I’m on private ground. The manager just asked if I would mark them he’d let everyone know what to look for and avoid. Not wanting to hide anything. Everything down here gets worked whether it a plantation for quail or a guys private deer Mecca.
Based on the comments I take it the flags in the ground are a no.

Then I would stick an orange survey flag next to it. Or with in ten paces.

You may think before you act. The question is did you listen to your own council?

I don't think the color matters. I'd stick the flag in the backing just to keep it simple. I'm sure coyotes have seen those little flags or enough human junk that they won't mind. I'd squirt it with urine or put a little gland lure on it to help with your scent if you're worried about it, I personally wouldn't worry about my scent. Once it's marked with another yotes scent, the next yote is more interested in who left the scent, rather than what the scent was left on. So, I think I'd squirt urine on the flag, use it in my backing, and post pics of my catches if I was you.

The land owners know where my sets are because they know my mark.

Marker or flag on the ground will be harder for the workers to see until the tractor is on top of it is the reason I suggested a tall stake marker. I don't think it would be a problem for the critters.

An alternative would be a #9 wire sticking up like a snare support about 4' high with flagging on it. The neon green flagging is easiest to see at a distance and might be different from other flags on the plantation.

I use red flagging tape, and tie it off across the road from the trap. I point the knot towards the trap. works well

I use a florescent orange arrow vane push pinned to a either a nearby tree or a thin stick stuck in the ground. Pretty low profile (like a leaf) to a color blind animal. I own an archery shop so it just makes sense. whistle

4ft fiberglass rod with tipped with colored duct tape. Wind won't blow the ribbons around and most people naturally steer around poles in the ground. Light, cheap and easy.

That's good too Calvin. Same line of thought I had, get it eye level with a man and it will be out of sight to most targets.

Well, wasn’t exactly on the flagged set, but about 20-30ft from it. Caught in a dirthole where I had caught a female last week. Put the flag on the blended pipe set that’s on the extreme edge of the 2 track across from it.

I use blue surveyors tape 3 -4ft above the ground and off to the side of a snare location if possible . It is not easily visible to a person unless they are close by so they dont stand out like a bright neon color .
