Ft Niobrara Refuge has an annual buffalo auction. Not sure if it's spring or fall. I was told most of them go to the native americans.

On a broad side buffalo find the ear go 2" back then 2" down pull the trigger so you can find out if you really know how to sharpen a knife. This takes out the orbital they drop like a rock then the work begins. Allan

The reservations in SoDak have buffalo. Some wandered off the rez into NE and they just shot them and left them lay rather than try to return them or salvage them. So I heard.

Heritage meats in leoti kansas sells buffalo meat. I always buy a boneless ribeye roll when I pick up the pigs we take there to be processed.
West of campo Colorado there is a guy that has buffalo, I think his name is 'dude' ratlaff. the guy who owns the gun shop in springfield will have his contact info I hear you can pay him way too much and shoot one. Closest packing house to there would be in dalhart Tx. There are also buffalo around the windmills between lamar and springfield, dunno who owns em.

There are several Buff ranches here that one could take them most any way they wish for meat, they are high fenced due to private ownership, if your after just meat you can even just have them dispatch and do the work.
Prices go by weight and bull, calf or cow, some will give you a discount if you don't want the hide or skull, if that's your choice make sure you take one in the winter, the hides are worth way more then !
Meat is fantastic if aged correctly, if not aged good, its about like moose !
Sorry if my opinions or replies offend you, they are not meant to !

Could you imagine shooting one of those from the ground with a self bow? Gotta hope he decides to walk away and not chgarge. I shot one in 2013 with a 57 lb longbow. Piled up amazingly fast , maybe 75 yard recovery. Arrow went all the way through , had about 22" or so hanging out the other side . Old herd bull , but ate pretty well . Certainly not a "hunt" in true modern definition . But they were wary and unpredictable , especially with people on foot. Marty, I'm betting you can find at least a couple of places in your neck of the woods.

Thanks for all the great answers.
I'm going to re phrase slightly.
Where can a guy find the most affordable buffalo? I'm sure if you go hang out with RK you could find a couple at the local tavern. See how you do that lol.

and i may be wrong but i don't think that one is all that big as far as they go. Bison are a lot like moose..... in that there don't seem to be any SMALL ones! And you can take that to the bank, from a guy who has packed over 50,000 pounds of moose meat on his back and has the bent pack frames and the hernia operations to show for it! (I've killed 2 bison as well!) Pete

Where can a guy find the most affordable buffalo? Oregon has a free range herd that isn't managed/recognized by the state which means no tag required. If you can find them and/or get permission on the private land they may or may not be on at any given time then you can just go shoot one.

If there facing you draw a X from horn to eye and shoot middle of the X ( They dont like to stand still when drawing the X ). I made sure I was in the box of the pickup so Im a little higher then them when shooting them when there facing you.

There is such a thing as a fat cow for 1000 dollars and it is called a Holstein which will be much better eating, if you can find one of those almost extinct family farms.
Forget the advice about aging a buffalo, unless you like the flavor of manure. Get them gutted, skinned and cooled in about as long as it takes to read this. A kind gentleman here, who ran a bar, gave me some buffalo meat as he had a pile of it outside the butcher, from a trophy bull and it tasted like dung. Young animals, killed and cooled right away are good flavored, but whether it is antelope or elk, things get sour or gut flavored to fast in transport and picture taking.
As stated, buff shooting is a racket that is too expensive. If you have your heart set on it though, take the time and make the contacts of range managers, and tell them you want a cull, that is not old as Teddy Roosevelt and they should give you a better price. Just remember this is not hunting, but shooting, like pig sticking. The hunt I was on involved a cowboy blazing away with a 45 Colt and whatever that almost hit me. There were two rogue cows that were herded by a dune buggy Volkswagen which could not be kept in the pasture. It was an experience that I would not care to repeat, as there is not a great deal you can do with a buffalo which has been bred to not kill the wranglers and stands around all it's life, unless it is one which keeps breaking out all the time.
Yes I have a Rolling Block I want to shoot a buffalo yet in the Swedish calibers, but not at the prices being charged now. It is like 50 dollar turkeys. For that kind of money I will buy beef and have something which I will not be wondering why the dogs won't eat it.
Just please use enough gun, with expensive penetrating bullets. Even on head shots people miss, and then it is a mess. The big hunks of slow moving lead were always the best in history and what I have experienced with buffalo.

The price of beef has a lot to do with the price of Buffalo. Right now beef is not cheap and I would guess it will be going up due to the loose in flooding. Back about 10 years ago I could have put you on a cow for about $500. I would guess it would be close to $2000 now.
