Looking for a recommendation on spray proof skunk traps i.e type, brand, source. Get a few request to remove a skunk where if the skunk sprayed it wouldn’t be desired. Don’t always have great success with live traps and not spraying.

I apologize if this has been covered before. I searched but didn’t find any previous discussions or I
didn’t do it correctly. Old guy on a smart phone ...dangerous combination

Thanks in advance

No such thing as a spray proof skunk trap. A tube trap is as close as it gets. Several different brands. All work well. Or can cover a regular cage trap.

Tubes work well, but not perfect. A skunk in a tube stays calm. People and animals don’t see the skunk so they do not harass the skunk.

Plastic-catch are my choice as well. I maybe had one over the years spray, but Im sure it was just being in a hurry and rough housing them.

As it warms up, remember to be picky on locations or use covers. They get hot in them.

Holy cats peskycritter, haven't heard from you in a while,
How's all the kids doing, they still helping ya out?

I too have a better success rate with open cage traps.
But the tube traps are def a quicker to pick up and
Replace with a new trap.

Thanks for the info. I’ll order up a trap and play around with it. Got an elderly fellow that asked for some help with skunks around his place. He has 3 little dogs so my intention is to limit problems between a trapped skunk and the dogs. Trade off is he has some nice land to trap that has a good creek running through it

No different than a cage, pick up, set a new cage and go.

I hear about refusals in tubes from time to time and like mentioned above larger cage traps are less apt to get a refusal. With double door traps and a solid cover skunks basically never spray when caught, when carried, or when transported. Have done hundreds over the years. Mostly set positive den sets, just pick em up and go. Have had a half dozen in the back at a time many times without issue. The tube trap has more of a singular use, while the double door traps are more versatile, can be used for skunks, coon, chucks, armadillos etc. with or without baits, trails, dens etc. Just bagged a couple dozen skunks recently with no issues at all as usual.

Another problem with the smaller size skunk traps is sometimes a coon will mess with them and set them off . Even if i'm setting for skunks i still get paid if i catch a coon .

I use mostly tube traps but sometimes a particular skunk will not go in. Then I use either a 9x9 Bridger or 9x11x24 Comstock. I wrap roofing felt around the cage traps and have never had one spray. The Comstock is also best if they are coming out of a hole or a tight area. I can use wire mesh to divide them and set up to 3 or 4 in one hole for multiple catches. The larger size Comstock swing panel traps also work very well for skunks.

I believe the more comfortable you are in dealing with the animals you are attempting to remove, it becomes a lot easier and more straight forward of what "needs" to be done vs what "can" be done but not needed. You will soon realize most of the crazy things you see people go through to do a lot of basic removals are overthinking the job. jmo

Precutting covers are ideal for situations like that. If you're doing multi critter removals and don't have a cover on the set that a skunk hits first, very easy to slip a cover over the trap to remove it and replace with a new one.

When dealing with the possability of catching pets, I'll set off the traps in the morning and reset them later in the evening. Its an extra trip but if it means keeping the landowner happy then it's worth it to me.

In neighborhood areas if I put out cages baited for skunks, I catch raccoons and cats because there are so many. They arrive at the trap before the skunks. So i use tubes to keep out the others. If I need to catch both I still set tubes and baited cages. And yes sometimes I catch a skunk in a cage.

Also kids, dogs, nosy neighbors, and homeowners will not stay away from the traps even though I tell them to stay away so I can catch the animals. They rile up skunks and cause them to spray. When I use tubes people don’t even know a skunk is inside and the skunk doesnt know the people are outside. Well it does, but it remains calm.

At dens or runs I use Comstock 2 door traps with sheet metal covers which als function as a nosecone. Wherever possible I use Comstock cages because they work great - no misfires and no escapees. They make me look good to customers. I just sent in an order for some traps.

Ztrap has a solid plastic pipe trap for skunks. I believe it comes in a couple sizes. I am not an ADC guy nor do I target skunks during fur season. My partner has a couple and he sets next to houses and buildings. It is a real advantage not to have to deal with spraying in these locations.
