I just purchased some of these for the next season for rats. I was thinking does anybody think or even tried these for mink. Using meat on the bait clip and setting these on the edge of any water? Just a thought that I think might be worth trying?.?..

Can you have bait out in the open in your state. Why not just use PCV sets for your mink.

You need to get somewhere and watch Jeff Haggerty do a demo. After spending a little time in the stream with him, I couldn’t believe all of the ways he has figured out to use them.
They are definitely effective for mink in certain situations, but I would think a pocket set would be a lot more effective with bait like you are talking. You have the appeal of the hole and the bait with a pocket.

MN has exposed bait regulations and I don’t think the restriction is limited to dry sets. Now, if you covered the bait with grass (like a fish stick) and made it more of a smell bait it could work and be legal.

Ya I know about the exposed bait. This is just something that crossed my mind and was curious if anybody actually tried it.

Are there any states that you can use exposed bait? Even in a small portion like it would take on this application. I know MN you cannot.

I believe that meat bait out in the open might present a host of problems, if it is legal in your state. Crows would zero in on it in no time, plus every free roaming neighbors dog would smell, and see it, and you could possibly wind up with some nontarget catches that could pull the 3/8" fiberglass pole out and go limping home with 1 1/2 bracelet and your name tag. I am not saying it will happen, but why take the chance, unless you are out in wilderness country and only have to worry with the scavengers destroying your set. This is just opinion.

I actually caught a buck mink in a baited trigger 150 I had set for rats. The bait was a carrot. I was very shocked when I pulled the trap up and there was a mink and not a rat. As far as using meat in this way, I think it would lead to far more headaches than it would be worth.

I agree with the problems. I didn't have plans of ever trying this just was a thought to see if there was anybody that tried it where you can.

I can see the potential of such a set late season mink trapping when there are just a few open pockets of water left that attract mink that are hard to make any other sets at.. It would be simple to make a sky cover from some thing, drill a holie it and slide down support rod over bait wire(only visible from below). Bullheads soaked in glycerin would make good bait that wouldn't dry out quick.

I've learned enough thru the years to now know that I don't know enough. KNOWLEDGE IS FREEDOM.

I agree with Drake. Moss works on a fish set. I am no mink specialist but hiding the bait probably improves percentages.

Like the fish set an occasional otter is likely.

They sound like they would work. I am glad there are others that think out of the box also. Thanks!
