What's the best way to go about saving and storing glands from critters I catch

I assume I seal them tight in a glass or plastic jar and keep it out of the sun. How long do they last, or should I freeze them, or maybe just use some sodium benzoate preservative?

are you selling them or for personal use? If selling contact your buyer they will tell you how they want them prepared and stored

Take care of them like you intend to sell them then you wont have to break any bad habits later.

I think I'm going to try selling some. Probably castor to start with. I know of some places that buy castor, and on Saturday I have to go make some beaver sets for a farmer I help (the nuisance beaver plugged up a small creek on his property & it's spilling into his corn field making it tough to get crops in).

It is best to learn how to locate the primary glands then to cut them relatively clean, free of excess tissue, hair and feces. This will help ensure you can get your best value. Keep the species gland cuts separate and freeze them. I wouldn't add anything to them in the event of you deciding to sell them.

If you add preservative to the glands it will prevent them from aging once put into a formula. That is not a desired effect.

Label the species and date the containers or bags clearly with a permanent marker or other means of tagging the bag or container. Things get forgotten over time so labeling will help greatly if seasons turn to years before you get around to selling or using them at times.

Most lure makers want to know the contents of the gland cuts prior to purchasing. So as stated it is a good idea to discuss this with potential buyers as to what they prefer.

Reproductive glands, anal and bladder are always good cuts. Some try to get filler volume with ear butts and foot pads etc. We don't use such cuts or buy that material. Many trappers throw $$ away yearly. Take the time to learn how to harvest your glands and you can make it pay and help our industry by utilizing the resource.

Keep in mind when holding glands a number of years if not vacuum sealed they will get some freezer burn and devalue the glands.

Bob is a great guy to deal with and more then treats his clients fair! I might add he also helps you do the very best at collecting glands.By nicely mentioning how it can be done better. I like constructive critism if im doing things wrong. Sorry bob I needed my glands this year.
