I have a neighbor close to me that wanted coyotes caught around his calving pasture this winter. I had caught the sixth coyote around the middle of January and was going to pull my last sets then but the guy wanted me to leave then until he was done calving. Since I could check the last two sets from the road and I went by them every day anyway I agreed. Well today I caught one and pulled the traps. The set had not been relured for exactly 86 days. Had caught 2 coyotes previously in that set. I dont know if I'd make a habit of going that long with out reluring but it is a testimony how good a coyote can smell. I'm sure the dirt hole had been full off water at least 3 times.

Same here I have a really good reculection early in the season. But by late season they all become a bit of a blur. I do know a oily attractant that soaks into the ground will work biggest part of a season.

That is a tremendous accomplishment.

25 years ago here in Ohio I had a similar arrangement at home where I could check a set with binoculars. Trap went in a dirt hole set with lure and urine. It was never touched until 78 days later when I caught a red fox. I suspect the location might have been a little bit off.

No shortage of coyotes around here. This place I caught this coyote is about a mile and a half south of my place. Even taken over 20 coyotes 8n the last 2 years between that place and mine and still regular see them and always see sign. A kid a mile and a half south of this place shot over ten one afternoon over a dead pile this winter.

I had a set that stayed for about 70-75 days before it took a fox on the last day of season once, set I could see every day as I went by and never went closer than 70-80' from day it was set til I went to pull on the last day. That was a Hawbaker lure about what would cover a match head. Lure lasts a long time and it don't take a lot of it. Only set i ever left that long.

We keep the deer tied up while we trap. Lol Up here mostly open prairie and farm ground. As long you stay away from the creek bottoms and trees not much problem with deer.

Don't set trails, or don't set in the trail. Actually setting in a trail is illegal in MO., though not enforced.

Sorry I’m just now getting back to this . Yes Sir if your pretty sure you didn’t have all the locals caught why are you thinking it took so long to make another catch ? Is this the same trap you caught the other six in , or at least the same spot ? Or do you think you had caught one family group that was using that location and no other coyotes worked that area ? Just looking for your thoughts as it’s your area .

Golf ball that's a very good question. Why something happens on a trap line is the question that will make us better trappers. First of I'll say that I was pretty much done trapping and the only reason I left the traps is because the rancher wanted me to. There was two set there and I had already caught 2 coyotes in each set. Both sets where step down dirt holes with poly under the pan. In other words not very weather proof sets and we had a ton of moisture in that time period along with regular freeze thaw. After a couple weeks I was reasonably sure both traps had probably silted in under the pan enough to cause problems firing, not to mention I would guess that there was several times the whole set was under water and frozen solid. The other trap I had to put probably 20 pounds of my weight to fire it when I pulled it. Another reason might be both sets were remakes and it would be my theory that the spookier coyotes were cautious to work them. Just my thoughts as a want to be wolfer. I do see proof in my area of coyotes that wont work a set. I have my theories on some of those reasons but I'm still testing them.

Not trying to out do you, but I had a first for me. I live on the edge of town and right across the black top is outside of city limits. I have permission to trap and goose hunt that field. Noticed a set of coyote tracks in it last October. On November 7th, I set a flat set with Andys horse meat bait and gland lure in a couple small mouse holes under the backer. I drive right by it every day on the way to work, so easy for me to conduct the required checks. That trap has been in the ground with waxed dirt since that time. Last Tuesday morning it finally connected with an old female coyote. So, that trap has been there for 147 days and produced. If it wasn't so easy to check with binos from the road, I would never left it that long. Farmer was tickled to death that I finally caught him. That set has seen every type of weather possible and was under 3 feet of snow just a couple weeks ago. Got an awesome picture of her and would post it if I was smart enough to know how.

Life is short, tomorrow is promised to none of us. Make the best of every day you have
