could is use petroleum jelly as a base for a lure or bait? i can only think of a few problems such as will other oils blend with it? and will the scent of the petroleum jelly deter animals?

it seals in odors. pretty worthless imo as a lure product. if you want a fairly neutral oil put some clean skunk fat in a jar. leave it someplace warm. a few weeks later pour off the oil. fat only no meat

lanolin is pretty thick even in warmer weather. skunk oil is thin till it gets real cold. lanolin has more smell than skunk oil but it is somewhat attractive to predators on its own. skunk oil is not. I would not call either of them a base but rather a binding ingredient like what you were thinking of doing with vaseline. your base is the primary odor in your mixture. like melting civet paste into skunk oil. the civet is your base. or using it to stretch some tail oil. the tail oil is your base.

I apply that to the moving parts on our cages to keep them running smooth and in operation. Haven't had an issue trapping animals from fox to opossum in them. I know guys who use it as a lure base and do very well with it. I don't so can't type on how it will do as a base

I have put skunk essence in melted Vaseline. smells good for a day or two then it doesn't really smell at all. You can mash or rub the place you put it with a twig and the smell returns. but for an even shorter time. it will keep snares working through freezing rain and coyotes will still stick their head in

It's interesting the great lengths folks go through to cover their scent trail while in the field, but think animals can't detect odors associated with this product. As stated, I don't use the product in any base form, but know many who do and do well on their catches. For personal use, if this is something you want to figure out, I'd give it a shot in a small batch and make a determination off of first hand knowledge. Learning from fails are sometimes the best teachers, because other doors open up for methods and products to use.
