Considering purchasing equipment and offering whole sounder hog trapping. Does anyone offer this service ? If so, how is your pricing structured?

Wondering if it's worth the $5000 investment

I would think you would need several units in high hog population- very large area for many miles, with land owners that are willing to pay what you need. Here it would not pay. Most that can afford to pay buy their own. Especially since the night vision has gotten so popular.

It was different 15 years ago. Better methods now. Most have better equipment.

It probably takes two weeks to get the sounder to commit fully on average here if they aren,t bothered or disturbed, unless it is in late winter. They run with dogs also. If the neighbor ran off the hogs after the trap was just set. It would take some time to get them back or not at all. Same way if they were shot at just before or just after you started. Sometimes you find out after the fact. Having more units increases options to maintain a steady income. At 5000$ a pop it might pay if there were enough opportunity for years. If you are in south Alabama the hogs will move into the swamps in summer or around wet areas of agriculture making access more difficult. Most are not going to want you around during deer season.

The more units the more your other costs would be, such as labor and added trailers, maybe a truck. Especially if you got lucky in 3 pens on the same day. The door would need to fall the first night they all entered, regardless.

If you are trapping along something like the Tombigbee the area is there. You would just need to know opportunity. You might try getting 20 -25 contracts before you committed to them or the purchases, of units.
That way if they wanted your services your customers would help you get started so the contract would start. They would contact their neighbors and friends for you.

It gets hot in Alabama in summer.

I'm wanting to get into predator trapping on ranches. I've been looking at a unit to maybe supplement what I'm doing. Seems like a good investment since I would already be on the property for a period of time. In my case I would just charge a set up fee to cover some time bait and such the main focus would be on predators with a little bonus for the land owner. As a business I see where the start up would be expensive and to make it profitable it would be labor and time intense.

Thanks Kirk. I talked with one guy that gets $100/hog which seems like good money until you factor in the costs.

That's until the last hog gets to acting like a trap shy beaver and becomes hard to kill. Of course, a good thermal setup will help fix those problems where it's safe and legal to shoot.

I recently started. I charge a setup fee and maintenance fee.

I built my own gate. I couldn't justify spending that much on one.

$100 a hog is high for this area. You can get that if it’s hobbled and taken to a high fence area. By me hog has to have at least 2” cutters to get $100 (they call them trophy pigs) and charge customers $350+. I don’t know where you came up with 5k. Is that for a yieger system ( not sure on spelling). For me farmers don’t want to pay, they just want you to shoot on site if you’re on there payroll.

How long would it take to make back your $5k?

Is it 1 job? 3? 15? How quickly are you able to finish these jobs and start a new one? Will that equipment be set up and making money most of the month?

The biggest question is can the $5k be spent somewhere else that will be more lucrative?

Farmers are notoriously tight with a buck, and unless having severe damge, they would rather just shoot them themselves or let some guy pay THEM for the fun of it.

Considering this thread is two years old, I would guess that $5000 has gone up quite a bit.

No it hasn’t really gone up. I just got a trap system. The cost was $5200
