I think the word is stolen not lost Snowpa. The public according to LE (if the article is accurate) is not in any danger. So the only victim, once again, is the person that is arrested. Gives a whole new meaning to shall not be infringed.
Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

Land of the free...until you have something the government decides you can't have anymore. I got to experience eminent domain this year as the state "paid me" for use of about 25 feet of my yard for a walking trail. Luckily, all they wanted from me was some green grass. I had neighbors that had to move sheds and fences 2-5 feet. I'm the end house with a 40 acre open field owned by the city, but they didn't want the city's land. That ground is actually owned by the school district not the city.

Either way why not buy it from another government type entity rather than make ordinary people uproot and move their sheds/fences 5 feet? I mean it's an empty corn field...no work to be done but lay the concrete. Yet they come 25 foot to the West and tear up yards. It's a crock and if they decided they wanted to build a road through my house tomorrow I'd have to sell it for what they deemed appropriate. What it comes down to is you never really own anything. You rent it until the government decides they don't want you to own it anymore. Period.

Illegal firearms sales ought not to even be thing in my opinion - govt shouldn't have any say in what kind of guns we own, how many, who we sell them to, etc. And if a felon can't be trusted with guns he should still be in prison.
Anyway, the way they were treating a fine old Colt Python in one of the pics I saw nearly made me cry.

"It's a crock and if they decided they wanted to build a road through my house tomorrow I'd have to sell it for what they deemed appropriate."
Not strictly true. Government is supposed to pay you "fair market value," the theoretical amount that a willing seller would sell to a willing buyer.
Of course, government doesn't follow its own rules half of the time, and often tries to screw property owners. If that happens, you have a Fifth Amendment right to a jury trial on the value of the property taken. Usually, you cannot stop government from taking the property, but you can contest their valuation.

Eminent domain should never be used for parks and trails, stolen from private property owners. Not only do they steal private property, they do nothing about the trash and crime that comes with it. James, you can contest it, however we have to pay for the legal fee's to fight it. The local government official, of course does not. Most government officials will do anything to get a vote. So if the public could take a farm or a ranch for a park and a trail and it would help a government official get elected, they would do it in a hard beat.
Sometimes your not a willing buyer and don't want to sell for any price. What if a family has a farm for generations there is no such things as "fair market value" Not everyone is a lawyer like James....honestly I have enough on my plate I'm not going to contest it James. Doesn't make it right. All those walking trails do in my opinion is make a nice place for the drifters to walk between cities without worrying about getting hit by a car on the highway. Now I'll have one literally 10 feet off the siding of my house on what used to be a nice corner lot. Caught the DOT lady checking out the property lines one day, and I asked her who would be responsible for mowing the portion of my yard that was acquired...I won't say bought because it wasn't really at all voluntary. She told me "well the city will be mowing it, but the project won't start till August." I told her the grass was going to be awful long by August...she drove off.

I had neighbors that had to move sheds and fences 2-5 feet. I'm the end house with a 40 acre open field owned by the city, but they didn't want the city's land. Two weeks after we moved into our home, I went outside to find some guy pounding stakes into my yard. Asked him what's up, and he informs that the city is going to be moving the street 17 feet (17 feet!!!) closer to my house. The streets didn't line up, and apparently there's been a few accidents there, so they decided that the best move would be to realign the streets. Heaven forbid they just make it a 4 way stop, it already had a stop sign in two directions. Front yard is 100 feet long, so they took 1700 square feet of my yard, along with three trees, two of which were awesome ancient locust trees, and only gave ,e two in return, one of which died. I also used to have some fancy steps leading to the sidewalk, they wouldn't rebuild those because apparently the walkway up to the house had to be ADA compliant. The best part? It was all in the right of way, so even though it's my yard, there was absolutely nothing I could do about it, and didn't get any compensation.

Who owns the existing right of way in your city?

Who owns the existing right of way in your city? Apparently the city does. For most of the city, the right of ways are 66 feet, 33 feet each way from the middle of the original road. But in the older part of town where I live, the right of ways are 100 feet, 50 feet from the middle of the original road. The right of way didn't move when they moved the road, it's stays in it's original spot. So even though it's "my" front yard, the city apparently actually owns part of it. (and no reductions in property taxes either, even though they took yard and trees and such, since "our" property didn't change, even though obviously the value of the property changed. We asked.)

If you are responsible and pay your own way you are punished. Work hard, raise a family buy a home. Do any improvements and you get to pay more tax for the effort. You also get to pay a tax that allows you to do the improvements. (you need permission from the government to improve anything you "own") Pay tax on everything. Cell phone, utilities, any purchases at a grocery store, hardware store, gun shop or auto parts. Pay tax on gasoline and real estate. Actually keep about half of what you earn.
If you are irresponsible and stay drunk or high, never hold a job and sleep all day you get rewarded. Pay no tax, pay no rent, pay no medical bills, pay no utility bills. Get even more money every time you pop out a kid. Get to vote for people who promise you more free stuff.
If a corporation wants your property to build a mini mall government sets a price and you get kicked off.
For the life of me I can't figure out why the number of people living in "poverty" keeps increasing
