Hello all.

Need some advice. I looked through a couple of pages and did not see this topic, so I apologize in advance if this subject has been touched. What do ya'll do when a coyote foothold trap gets sprung, and you miss the catch? Do you remake at the same spot, or pull the trap and set elsewhere? The dirthole set has been down for two days......put in Monday and got hit last night.

I guess I'm also asking will that coyote ( or any other for that matter ) be onto this same spot / set now and avoid it, or does it really matter?

thanks for your help.

Reset the trap, and make sure it is bedded solidly. Good chance at least for my area that the trap was pulled from the bed by a deer. A loosely bedded trap could get tripped by a critter digging for the movement. Either of these things wouldn't alarm a yote. If a yote was pinched and got loose it may not return, but his buddy will.
Just my two cents worth.

Put it right back in the same spot. Bedding solid is a personal preference lol.

Rinse and repeat set

You may think before you act. The question is did you listen to your own council?

Always reset it appears the location is correct so nail those butt sniffers!Without trail cams its tough at times to be sure of what snapped it

Almost all my sprung trap misses are deer. Regardless reset that trap right there. and since you know the location is good put a couple more about 10'-30' in either direction.
fwiw, critters don't know what a trap is, they do learn that it pinches after they been in one, but they still can't say "there's a trap".

Thanks guys for the help.

After reading your comments it all makes sense now. There was no fur anywhere, no smell, and no paw prints or signs of any scratching or struggling. The trap being tripped by a deer is hopefully what happened.

Read the miss and adjust the set to make up for any errors, ie: too close/far from the hole, center/right/left, maybe set another trap where it put it's paw to sniff around.

Missed at a dirthole last week when a small rock got caught in the corner of the jaws not allowing the trap to close completely. Thought I had sifted all of the stones out but either missed one or it was kicked into the pattern by the coyote working the set. Caught 2 nights later at a t-bone set up the hill. Same coyote, who knows ?

I'd have like video when that trap threw dirt in the coyotes face.
