I have to wonder if what your seeing isn't the American Egret, they are all white. For Whoopers, look for black on the outer 1/4 of the wings, and a bit of black on their face....as well as the red top-knot like a Sandhill. I saw a single Whooper this spring over in Missaukee County, maybe 25 miles west and south of my place here in Roscommon Co.

Not seen any whoopers, but there are thousands of sandhills migrating through the plains of eastern Colorado in September and October. Those things seem to be all over. In my area, crop farmers are upset with the DNR for not creating a season on them because the cranes dig up the seed nodules as they are sprouting. A farmer I know lost about 40 acres of corn last year.
The difference between animals and humans is that animals would never let the dumbest ones lead the pack.

I致e seen them quite often flying and from a boat when they were in a grass flats as well, I知 about 20-30 miles from the largest wintering grounds for them down here. The Aransas wildlife refuge documented around 500 cranes this year. We are in special zones down here where we can稚 shoot Sandhills along the coast because of mis identification between the whoopers and Sandhills. Giant birds, no mistaking them when you see em

I've seen Whoopings a few times. Thousands of Sandhills, but very few Whooping.
