How big do you trappers normally make your weasel boxes? What’s the smallest box size you’ve seen or used? I’m thinking of using cut up old pallets that I can find for free. 4 inch boards... is box size important to the weasel?

We don't trap weasels here in KY but I would think as long as the box is big enough for your trap to function properly it will be good to go.

Big enough to hold your trap with a little extra room at the back for your bait. [Linked Image]

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

The wooden Victor rat trap is 3 1/4 " wide so for bottoms they are OK. but the sides go on these edges of the bottom and top boards; so those should be 5 1/2" boards so there is clearance when the trap goes off.
That will determine what pallets you pick up that have the larger boards.
Stay away from the blue chep brand because the hardwood is nasty for nail driving.

old highway straps make for good hindges when cut up in 3 " sections

The " wild Zoo auction " is Friday so we will see what weasels go for then.

I scab boxes like this up and they work great. Really any size works it just needs to be a cubby. A peice of
4 to 8 inch PVC pipe works great also. I have not trapped them now for a while because I love to have them around the ranch. They are the best mouse catching machine out there.

If you use the rat traps for a trap, make the box wide enough for the trap to fit with a little breathing space side to side but long enough for the trap and for bait to be contained or hang without interfering with the trap. The boxes don't need to be big to work.

Stick with the pallets and you can get four made from the right ones you pick up.......and the 2 x 4 go for firewood. Stay away from the edges when cutting because there are always sideways nails the saw can hit.
With the trap being almost 7 inches long and with a bait bucket..ie cat food can being 3 " and the front and rear doors you need 11-13 inches of boards, maybe a couple in inches for overhead for snow sheading.
The Price is Right... Free for the making.
