Just saw on the news that China may stop providing rare earth materials and products to the USA as part of the trade war. The USA receives 80% of our supply from China. These products are used in everything from dishwashers to military aircraft.

Maybe Canada can supply?

If the U.S can get Brazil on board we could starve China to our will should we need to.

If the U.S public moderately reduces purchase of Chinese goods China will become quiet reasonable to trade with.

Very likely scenario.

Trump may not be capable of understanding all the impacts of his acts on global trade. That wouldn't be such a big problem if he would listen to those who's job it is to understand such things and advise him. Markets are getting nervous and trump could lose support from all but the most devoted members of his base. I believe many republicans are getting nervous too.

Some people on here may not be capable of understanding that Trump is doing the right thing. First Pres. to do so when it comes to China.

The dems are in the Chinese back pocket. as long as they can keep up this witch hunt charade, the Chinese will try to hold out till the next election.

This whole trade deal is insane, if I as an individual was doing business with someone and they were stealing from me I would be done with them, now. Trump is not asking for anything but honesty and fair dealings. What are we supposed to give in return, let them steal a little. Trump should get the WTO to do there job or the US get out of the WTO. He should give China 6 months to fall in line or we are done with them and let the chips fall where they may. It would get ugly.

He understands completely what it takes to get these other countries attention, a kick in the teeth gets their attention. They have their fingers crossed he doesn't get reelected, and they can go back to business as usual. Business as usual entails driving us into the ground, while exporting our wealth and technology.

We have rare earth mineable areas here, I believe the Chinese already own the existing US rare earth mines. There were two mines in the southwest, one owned by unocal/molycorp and the other by climax? Anyways I think the Chinese bought out both mines, no doubt so they could put the screws to us later.

We have a mine here in s.e.Alaska coming on line as soon as bureaucracy gets done with it
Don't sweat what Trump is doing. Pain here and there in the short term. Major gains in the ling term.

Just doing what I want now.

The trick with the mines is they have to produce the specific rare earth elements that you need. Not all rare earths are equal in value or required uses.

American politicians in general are in the Chinese pockets. Remember it was Nixon that got it going then Clinton that escalated it.

About the election- Chinese don't care. Theyre playing the long game. They know that if they scare Americans they will get what they want because of elections. Chinese don't have this election problem.

What Trump is doing is like building a new school. Most people want the school, but NOT NEAR THEM. Too many people who want this country to remain solvent are unwilling to suffer a dime of inconvenience to see it happen.

Lemhi County Idaho (near Montana border) has rare earths deposits that have been explored but not yet mined.

I have been a little worried that some foreign government will have President Donald Trump assassinated in hopes of getting another patsy in office, who will allow them to continue to screw over America. England seems an especially unsafe place for him to go.

years ago when I was a kid you did not buy anything made in japan and all China stuff was junk. We may pay more to produce it here but people will make better wages and Walmart will fall apart and the small stores will pop up again.

While I agree that we should buy American and support local business, even if it costs a bit more, the avg American is so stupid, self centered, and short sighted, it will never happen on a large scale basis. Walmart isnt going anywhere.

Mr. Ed: Chinese labor is cheap but not like it used to be. The main reasons China can pay shipping costs and still sell cheap are (1) economy of scale, (2) large modern factories using stolen USA technology, (3) just slightly modifying USA designs to avoid expensive R&D, and (4) currency manipulation.
