I'm looking to make my own bait for coons next year, and I'm not sure about amounts/ratios. Ground carp, crawfish oil, liquid smoke, sodium benzoate for preservative powers, and glycerin for anti-freeze powers.....how much of each? Looking to make more of a pasty/hamburger texture bait rather than a runny gooey slimy type bait.

I don't know, but I would add some beaver castor to that as well.

A simple bait for coon using carp.

Get some carp gut them then freeze them. It's a lot easier to cut them up when frozen I have a band saw that I use.

Get a bag of granulated water softener salt spread layer In the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket. Then add a layer of cut up carp chunks then add a layer of salt and keep going till you have a full bucket of salted carp.
They will not rot and are pretty much freeze proof and have a very distinct odor.
A chuck pined up under the bank or shoved In punch hole or a chunk pined In a pocket set will catch you some coon.

If you want ground up carp just grind and add what ever to the mixture. Anise oil works pretty good as a additive. Now form balls and place them on a cookie sheet and freeze them. When frozen dump them out In to a bucket and keep them frozen. When you need some just pour out what you need and use them at your sets.

salt preserves fish best then add a drop of crawdad oil/anise mix on a chunk before pinning in place

if ya freeze chunks, make them separated slightly on a cookie sheet on wax paper THEN bag together or you'll have 1 massive fish chunk.

grinding just takes time and makes mess that's completely avoidable.

as for amts and ratios, it depends how you want it to smell.

you were supposed to ask loved ones for available bait/lure books.. all 3 Nick Wyshinskis as well as Kyle Kaatz, and Russ Carmans for your Christmas presents last yr......didn't you get that memo?

a bag a stock salt is good too if that's easier to get your hands on than the water softner. about as cheap and works just as good

That's funny. Sometimes your family or neighbor must wonder what you are doing Beav. You are very crafty though.

Here's the rest of the story.
My buddies were participating In this carp shooting contest. Do to family commitments I couldn't go along. So of coarse I asked if they would get me some for bait. You can kind of guess where this Is going. Well I got home late that Saturday and didn't check the fur shed till the next morning. I think there must have been around 30 carp In my shop. I did get back at them some time later. LOL

But I did end up with lots of bait.
