STRICTLY FROM A GREASE PERSPECTIVE
1. When you folks degrease new traps using the dishwasher is there any prep that you do to the traps to help out the dishwasher method or do you basically just throw them in and turn it on?
2. Is one trip through the dishwasher normally sufficient or do you folks run it a second time just to be sure?
3. What is your method of degreasing using the dishwasher as a tool?

Best method is to take your wife out on a date immediately after you finish removing your now clean traps. (traps done secretly of course) For your surprise date with your wife arrange for a local high school kid to babysit. One your wife doesn't really know. Wife will be so happy about her surprise date and your thoughtfulness she wont worry about the baby sitter. Next day when she sees the dishwasher and blows up you can blame it on the babysitter. Assure your bride you will never hire THAT girl again. Best part is you wont even have to clean the mess and as a bonus you still get points for your date!!!

Lol I appreciate the information Gentlemen.
I did it once before with brand new traps and didn’t have any issues. I’m hoping that will be the case this time also.
Like I said, I did a batch prior but I wasn’t sure if once was enough, were they fully degreased, should I hit them with something else, or was there a better method.
I’d like to get it down that I know after I do this and then that, they’re definitely degreased but I don’t have my technique down yet.

If you used a proper degreaser. then I would not worry much. Just speaking from a grease removing perspective.
You may think before you act. The question is did you listen to your own council?

The hot water should help clear the pores of the metal. You could even use wd40 which is a degreaser not a chain lubricant. Go crazy and don't geton your wife's bad side

I ran them through the dishwasher twice on heavy one right after the other while they were still hot. That should do it.

They came out beautiful after 2 runs through. I have found my method. The wife watched me pull them out because I fell asleep on the couch before she got home. You guys were right about the rust. She said, “Eww, it’s pretty dingy in there. Is that from the rust?” I said yes. She said,”Do you just run it again with nothing in it?” Of course I said yes, hand washed the dinner dishes and it’s running now. I’m praying that it works. It’s the only way I degrease traps. Works very well with my dishwasher.
If it’s new bodygrips, I cut all the chains off and compress the springs. If chains are left for any reason, I simply hook them on the pegs to prevent them from falling. Then I fill the dishwasher with traps, add detergent, and run it on the hottest, most thorough cycle available (hot, tough scrub). Works very well.
Only once do I remember it making any sort of “mess”. I took out the traps, added detergent, ran a cycle empty and it was back to good as new.

Aix, do you only run them through one time? I did two just to be sure. It was after the second run, which I did on the toughest and hottest run, that they came out nice and rusty.
So I ran the dishwasher again to try and remove the rust film on the inside. It worked half way but then I just used a brush to hit it quick as well as the sprayer from the sink and it’s like new.

Aix, mine runs a long time too. I wouldn’t put any rusty ones in either, just new traps. But when I opened up the door with that hot, humid heat, they already had a good surface coat of rust on them. Of course the wife was standing right there and at that time I was wishing that she was color blind.
But I ran it again, hit it with a brush real quick while it was still wet, sprayed it down, and it all came right off.

Aix does your wife know this? Sure. It’s not a big deal. If someone is running the dishwasher and leaving them overnight, I would expect them to have a rusty mess. I have no problems. Aix, mine runs a long time too. I wouldn’t put any rusty ones in either, just new traps. But when I opened up the door with that hot, humid heat, they already had a good surface coat of rust on them. But I ran it again, hit it with a brush real quick while it was still wet, sprayed it down, and it all came right off. They’ll rust in a hurry. Definitely not a “start the dishwasher before going to bed” type of activity. I remove them from the dishwasher when the washing cycle is complete. A thinned, rusty metal primer dip and hang dry, little camo spray paint to finish it up, and I’m set.

Aix, I was just going to hit them with some Rustoleum. I too realized that you stop it right after the washing is done. I don’t know if that rusty film would’ve come off if it had dried.
Tony, I like that idea too.
