I always thought the best way to care for new foot traps was to pile em up in the back yard. mow around them spraying lawn clippings on them and let the grass grow up through the pile. by fall the oil had all rusted off and I could tune, dye and wax.
my attitude has changed. I think now your better off to take them to a car wash and hi pressure wash them real good. toss in the back of your pickup and drive home. hot summer day they will be dry when you get there. tune them all and wax before they rust. should be years before they need dye. springs will last a lot longer this way.

I always thought of rust as the enemy. They will rust soon enough This. Clean then wax. But what ever you do after a few catches It will be wore off.

This has been the exact same path I followed.

I light rust the traps that way they can take coat of dye and then wax also help the wax to stay on longer. It dose not wear off as fast. When over rust and not take care of then rust is the worst thing.
