Anyone try tire sets. A guy I know said he has alot of success with them on coyote and fox. Seems hard to believe

I had no success with that set. I think the cows kicked the tire and set off/got to the trap after. I have not give up, im going to try to stake the tire down after I set the trap.

The only success I had was catching the neighbors dog. It was the first set of 4 I set and on my way out I had already caught her so I thought it may be successful but never was. But I will try again also

Thanks for the idea. I have a couple perfect spots right outside of a pasture fence where these might work. But what I'm going to do is put the tires out now. I might even start throwing chunks of ground hog in them for bait for the couple of months prior to setting traps.

Hopefully I'll be posting about positive results. Negative results won't get a post. LOL

I tried It. First I placed the trap In the tire. nothing even came close we had snow so no tracks. Then I placed the trap outside the tire easy to do just move the tire. Second check I come and every thing Is all tore up tire chewed up along the edges. Snow was gone so I couldn't tell what had been caught. Trap was still there. As I'm driving out the land owner flagged me down and told me he had killed this coon in my set yesterday after noon. That coon brought me $24.00 at NAFA.
I will try It again this season.

I tried this last season. I did have fox tracks on the tire one time. I did catch a coon there though. I set the trap inside, but maybe outside is better. I'll try it again sometime, if a tire's near where I make another set. You just have to try something different once in a while. You never know

I figure that a trap placed Inside would have to have the critter getting Inside the tire to get the bait. But If the trap Is outside, the critter as It circles the tire would more likely get caught. A little urine or a dab of lure placed at the trap location may help.

At least a tire make great eye appeal anytime during the season. And that tire could be attached to the trap as a drag. You wouldn't even have to bury the chain. Just blow a hole trough the side wall run you chain through that hole place a fender washer on the chain and hide It all Inside the tire.

Knowing my luck I'd come back and that blasted beast would've chewed through the tire just enough to pull itself free. All I'd end up seeing is shredded steel wall wires and rubber everywhere. LOL

That coon had some shoulders and he just barely roughed up the tire edges. But If It can go wrong It will. LOL

Good luck ive been baiting a tire going on 5 years and every season first day I add a trap! So far its a waste of steel other then the occasional opie. I've seen were yotes climb in it during the summer but during season its a no go! Honestly I think it would work better if you attached a piece of plywood to the bead, then drilled 4- I" holes. Putting a trap on a drag at every hole. The set would stay baited the entire season. might even consider adding grain to draw mice! If it works it will help find a use for old tires

ya chain the trap to the tire so it becomes the drag like Beav said!

If I remember right the tire set is to be used in sheep pastures with vanilla wafers for bait ! Not sure I ever believed the Nilla wafer part , lol .

After Beav brought up this topic last season I did locate a tire in the middle of a field next to a grass row that divided both fields. Bait was up inside tire bead. First catch, a skunk. I later put a flat set a few feet away using an old deer skull and picked up a female yote, OUTSIDE the tire. I think you will certainly increase your chances by having a second set somewhat close. Maybe two traps, one on each side 5-10 off the tire edge. The tire has eye appeal from a long way off.

I would not put a tire on someone else’s ground but I’ve been saying I will try it on my own property some time. Biggest problem I’ve had the last few years is no coyotes to speak of , I’ve only caught two here in the last two years. I guess a trap can sit idle in a tire just as good as any other set , lol .

We use to use those 80Lb square hay bales like that. After all the hay was picked up we would save a few and put them out In the bare field they were great visuals. Made the sets so the caught critter couldn't tear up the bale. Caught lots of fox that way don't know why a tire wouldn't work the same way.
If you ask the land owner I see no reason why you couldn't place them on his land.

So does everyone typically use two traps for this set? One in the middle of the tire and a blind set on the outside to catch the Yote circling? I like the idea of putting a flat set close to it. May have to try something like this next season.

I only made one tire set last year and caught a coon. I figured my best chance at a catch was to have the trap outside the tire. And that's what happened.
As spooky as some coyotes are I figured they would circle the tire but wouldn't step Inside. Some lure or urine applied to the tire close to the bedded trap might act as a guide.

A dirt hole or some other type of set within 10 feet or so of the tire may catch any critter that might be drawn Into the tire set but won't work It. Also may give you a chance at catching some doubles. I'll have to do some more experimenting next season.
