Hi,
Could someone please help me with modifying predator traps? How do y'all like them done? Any info on jaw laminating and base-plating?
Where can it acquire cable restraints for coyote, bobcat, grey fox, and 'coon? What is the best brand and type? Price?
Thanks,
AT.

What beav said

You may think before you act. The question is did you listen to your own council?

I can not indorse the above feelings. ^^^^

There are traps that need help desperately but there are some like the Minnesota brand that don’t.

Like I said straight out of the box. Coon traps rat traps body grips need only to be adjusted for pan tension and trigger travel and your good to go.
I can't think of any trap out of the box that I would have to make any serious modifications too. I think we all get to wrapped up In this mod thing.

I have run dukes since I've started. Just now taking k-9 trapping somewhat serious. With that being said I still run dukes. I'm running 1 3/4 offsets. I see no sense in buying expensive traps to start with. However they have all been baseplated so I have center swivel and stiffer frame. Also the jaw ends have been bent up, but no bubble weld. They've held up well for me.

Those two links to the archives represent a couple hundred pages of discussions of and instructions about any mod that you can do. (I suspect Wolfdog91 has tried them all, and can guide you, but after reading all those pages you will require less guiding)

Fwiw, I agree with the Beav. Use the traps as they were designed to be used and they need no mods. imo, if you expend the same money and time (time is money) on buying a better trap instead of modifying an undesirable trap, you will be better served in the long run.
Now I will say that trap modifying can be a hobby in it's own right and if you just wish to modify for the sake of modifying, it can keep you busy buying new traps to damage.
Not everyone feels this way obviously, but I consider any mods other than chain or trap tuning to be damage unless done by a professional welder, and how would I know who did the work? .

I didn't study them at length but, I didn't see in your regulations that you need cable restraints, it says you can use snares and I would chose a lethal snare over a CR if I could. Forum member Newt seems to know his stuff and will keep you legal but effective with his snares, I think, http://www.snareone.com/

tjm, we are wanting to use cable restraints so that we won't accidentally kill a neighbor's (or our own) dogs or cats.

Cable restraints have a relaxing lock and you have to hang them so you don't have major entanglement situations. If the animal gets severely entangled a relaxing lock will not work.
Lots of dealers can supply you with a CR.

Don't set any kind of snare or cable restraint if you think you will catch them. They are not 100%.

If you are that close to neighbors stick with foot hold type live traps. Get Newt's book and read it anyway if you are interested in snares. Good snare locations are also good locations period.

We here In WI have to use CRs I myself have caught 18 dogs In them. Never been a problem so far, most have been let go by their owners. But you never know what may happen But If It were me I'd warn your Neighbor about you trapping and do what you have to do.

Back to mods.
Base plating won't catch you any more critters neither will laminations. File off any sharp edges on the factory jaws and get to setting traps.
