I have a few questions to ask. Why is pure skunk essence called "Pure Quill Essence"? Also, I need info on modifying coyote, bobcat, and fox traps (i.e. base-plating and jaw laminating.)

Skunk essence can be tinctured.

Skunk essence can have the thick substance in it that is called mustard (this is a natural part of the essence and there is nothing wrong with using this too. Lure makers like the clean liquid.)

If essence is the 100% real deal, not tinctured, and is pure, clean essence without the mustard in it then it is referred to as pure essence.

the term PURE QUILL means authentic; real, not imitation or artificial.
slang term...like Real Deal

Your second question is very broad. Basically you need a welder and then buy the base plates and laminations from just about any trapping supplier and have at it. There are six pages in the archives dealing with prepping traps. Many of the topics are about modifying.

Years ago, Charles Dobbins (Paul’s Dad) said pop riveting jaw laminations and nameplates would work instead of welding. Welding is faster (MUCH FASTER) but clamping jaws and baseplate, drilling and pop riveting does work if you can’t afford a welding equipment. I’ve done it successfully. However, by the time I changed all my traps to laminated jaws, I ended up having to change out the springs. Base plates are nice but all this work adds about a pound of metal and lots of hours. Bottom line: just go buy Sleepy Creek off-sets because the jaw face is wider, they have incredible springs even if they’re used, and the cost won’t kill you no matter what size you use.

don't discard the mustard it has uses as well. The empty pods and mustard are both useable

I think his question is Why "Quill", why not just skunk essence, pure skunk essence etc,? If I look up quill it, I find no mention of skunks-

My best answer is because for a hundred years ignorant trappers have just called it "quill" without regard for the English language. I have wondered the same thing in the distant past. It could be the piercing smell or it could be related to the aiming tube or....?
