Might toss it in a lake or creek for a few days to a week. It's gonna need to be outside for a while - that canvas will hold the "new" smell for quite some time. The above was my thought as well.

I can still use the drift sock, just didn't like the tapered sides. If baling baking soda doesn't help it's headed to the pond.

You would be much better of to buy an untreated tarp. They aren't expensive. The smell isn't coming out. It will degrade to the point where you can't smell it, but coyotes will smell it. Some coyotes won't care, others will. I'd do what Taximan said and get you a new one. In fact, I will go you one better. Go to Home Depot or Lowe's and buy one of the painting drop cloths. They are untreated and sort of a drab tan color. Get one large enough to double the fabric so you can make a rectangle, about 18-20 inches wide at the narrow side and 30-36" on the long side (with the fabric doubled). Now get some quilt batting, the kind that is about an inch thick. Cut it to the same size as your doubled over cloth (i.e. say 20" X 36"). Now sandwich your quilt batting in between the folded up layers and sew the ends of the fabric, and make a few sewing lines through the middle of the drop cloth. The idea is that you are making sort of a quilted drop cloth. It will perform as well as your standard drop cloth, but will also be wonderful on your knees with a little padding that will blunt some of those sharp rocks or sticks.

What's the appeal of a drop cloth over knee pads or a gardener's pad or anything like that?

What your smelling is the Paraffin used to water proof the canvas. The old timey way was to dissolve as much Paraffin in White Gas as it would take then soak the canvas in it or paint it on. Afterwards hang it out and let the gas evaporate. "No Smoking Please!" If the smell is a problem for you, get a plain canvas tarp, buy a plastic tarp or, I used a "Space Blanket" for winter on snow/ice etc.

It keeps the ground in front of the set clean and makes it easy to throw away extra dirt and mud after you make the set.
Just passin through

I have always carried away any left over dirt and deposited back by the truck. Don't know It It's needed but It can't hurt. NO matter what you use as a ground cloth I'm sure any smell left by that cloth will dissipate very quickly. I have a super light weight rubber floor mat that I use. One side Is roughed up so It doesn't slide and that Is the side I always keep toward the ground. It's not very big but It suites my needs. It rolls up and you can place it in your bucket and It's easy to clean and your knees are always dry. Well for the most part.LOL

Dollar store- $1.00 anti-slip rubber bathtub mat. No smell, stays dry, easy clean, very light, rolls up small for transport.
