Here it is , Friday the 12th of July. I should be at the NTA convention as I had planned all along. But the family decided to celebrate my mother's 90th birthday this weekend. Her birthday was the 11th and we had lunch today and dinner tomorrow. But since I could not be at the convention looking at all the cool gadgets..... I took an hour or so today and modified a Duke #3 into a dogless Duke #3. It came out super. Probably put a couple dollars in it and may add Taos 4 coil springs as the factory seem a little weak. I know I could just buy traps already made up and modified just the way I like them. I have made a dozen Duke #2 coil springs dogless using a the design like the old montys dogless. And have done up a few Duke #2s just like these. I do not make any for sale.... just for my own use, and just because I can. Don't ask me to sell any. I won't !! But man, do I love to tinker and weld, and make some cool stuff. Very rewarding!! [Linked Image]

Nice job! I like to tinker too! I took a duke #1 and made it a stop loss trap.

Bear in mind that I'm not a welder or a guru. Did you use the trigger bar from a 650? I can't quite make out from the pics how it works.

The set up is based kinda like the MTP 650s and 750s. I take a 3/4th" wide by 1/8th" thick flat metal about 13/8th" with a 1/4th" hole in an upper corner and weld it perpendicular to the frame with just a small gab between the pan bracket and the flat metal I'm welding on. I then weld just a 1/2" wide by 1/8th" thick flat iron maybe a half in long or so to the inside of the jaw..... offset to one side opposite the hole in the metal I just welded on. ... on the outside edge of the jaw. I weld a small nail to the cross frame so it is touching the spring pin. I take a cut off wheel in a small grinder and cut off the rest of the cross frame outside my weld. This piece that falls off has the dog on it. Then I take a 1/4" rod and bend it in a very tight 90 . I make sure it swivels in that hole I drilled easily. I clamp my jaw opened as much as it would go. I make sure when I swivel the bent rod it catches the lug I welded on the jaw. And that I can open my jaws so it dosen't catch on that swivel rod while I am setting the trap. After I make sure all works like it should I slide a 3/8th" nut on the end of the rod opposite end of the cross member and weld it to the cross member with the rod inside. With the trap clamped open where I want it I take a file and file the dog opening on the pan way down..... to where I want it. Last thing is to take the old dog from that piece you cut off the cross frame and shorten it a bunch …. bend it a little and with the rod set to look like it's holding down the jaw with the lug on it...… I weld that piece of dog to the rod. With the dog catching the pan the way I want it I take off my vice grip holding the trap open. When you push the pan down like normal, the rod is able to rotate and the jaw with the lug against the bent part of the rod flies shut. If your like me everything I just typed is all gibbish and I could not figure it out till I get a trap in my hand. The chain set up was made already but I did make the rod for the baseplate. I will do over a dozen of these traps.... if I make all 12 pieces then go on to another part, I think I could modify a trap easily with about an hours time for each trap. I just love to take steel (can't stand working with wood) and make something that when I am done …… should out last me or the next person who has it !!!
