The media is going crazy about a person who shot a polar bear.
Is it hype or is there a back story?

Lock him up-he's a slob for leaving garbage(whale offal)laying around his yard and for not utilizing a valuable natural resource(Bear).

If the facts are indeed true, the guy sounds like a first rate bum.

Whale meat left to rot? Leaving the bear to rot? Imagine the smell in his yard??

Legalities aside, the guy must be a real piece of work.

Edit: Just read the dates. Things are pretty cold up there during that time period from what i understand. Leaving an animal frozen to dispose of in spring wouldn't be a huge issue I guess (legalities aside) during those months.

In Kaktovik having a polar bear come into your home is equivalent to a home invasions in Texas. He defended his home a property. In a legal manner.
I thought you guys were going to dump the MMPA. Make Alaska great again.

My concern is the media wouldn't post the facts.

I don't think the defense of property was the issue. It was the failure to salvage that got him in trouble

Surprising no one took it from his yard. On of the great failings of American government policy that they have made the polar bear valueless. By over protecting marine species that are not actually in any trouble they created undue hardship for aboriginal people and deprived the government of the revenue the utilization of these resources would have created and the taxation there of. But the people of Kaktovik are doing a good job of promoting the tourist aspects of polar bear and making revenue that way. But that is not traditional and not open to everyone the way a hunting based economy is.

But at the last FHA sale they had 300 polar bear, after the sale they still had 300 polar bears. Dump the MMPA

300 bears is a lot of freezer room taking space.

Think of all the fish flies that can be tied.................only to be seized when they leave Canada in a unsepected fisherman fly tier.

Big change from a few years ago. They had to call the cops because a fistfight broke out between buyers over some Polar bear skins.

Alaska natives could use some income from Polar bear hides. Or from guiding. But at least they kept the non natives from hunting! That must be worth something?

In northern Canada every region and known sub population has a sustainable quota for polar bears but because of the MMPA the local guides here don’t have the line up of American hunters like they used to get. The majority of bears taken are by native hunters. Most bears are sold to private buyers. Here in this region the inuvialuit hunters would never leave a bear rotting outside their house. Some monster polar bears up here.

There are so many polar bears along the Alaska coast they are a nuicance the natives may appreciate a few non-native hunters especially if the could get guiding fees. Isn't the American motto "pull yourself up by your boot straps"? dump the MMPA and give the Inupiat some boot straps!!

What is your definition of a village?
I live in what would be called a village. It doesn't have rotting animals laying around.

Boco The Villages are the villages. They are what they are. Kaktovik has an island a ways off shore where they beach several beuhead whale a year. They are striped of muktuk and most of the meat bet we are talking a 50' animal in some cases. The Island is crawling with polar bears. electricity is expensive and the homes are small and old. Keeping meat and blubber in the porch is the way to do it. If a polar bear raids you have to defend. With no market legal market and you cant sew what you going to do with a polar bear. The Feds boxed him into a corner now they are persecuting the guy. The Queen would never have let this happen she has a fiduciary obligation to aboriginal people. George Washington burned as many Indian Villages as he could once they lost King Georges protection.

Not saying that what the guy did was good he should have asked for help. But some people don't cotton to charity. Dump the MMPA and this would never happen.
