Alot of people i have talked to are telling me i should wait 2-3 weeks after the trapping season opens to start. my father talks about blue pelts? and hair slipping? anything too this? end of october here in NY can have some pretty chilly days,

temp means nothing-length of daylight.those telling you to wait a couple weeks are giving you solid advice.middle of Nov. for me especially in this market.get out early and play with coyotes till stuff primes a little if you must but i try and avoid even doing that anymore.i finish archery seasons then go full tilt anymore.good luck

Different species prime at different times, and some are saleable less prime than others. I would contact a fur buyer in your area and ask him when is the best time for your area for the species you are targeting. Will you be on private or public ground? You also need to consider if others will be trapping your area before you start if you wait.

Trap when you have time to trap.

Coyote fur is goo here around the end of october. Trapping season starts in November for them. Most of the other fur is best from Thanksgiving to Christmas here. Ask a fur buyer when the time is good to harvest what you are after.

it depends on the species. For coon it's probably too early. For me, I won't trap any coon until the 15th Nov. Even then the smaller coon won't be completely prime.

My deal anymore is a long walking land line about 2 weeks before our mink/muskrat season opens. This kind of gets me in shape for it.

Muskrats are the only thing i wait on, usually dont start on those till Christmas.Good coon will be prime here, the small coon wont, and if you wait for the small coon to prime, they wont be worth much more and might be holed up by then anyways.

Nov.1 for coyotes and middle of Nov. for coon.

Open 365 days a year they den them ,,airplane,, helicopter .snare,, shoot and trap coyotes.

I don't recall ever seeing a blue yote pelt all I know is here the longer they wear it the worse it gets. I've kept track the past 5 years straight my first of season hides have always been my high sellers. Cant speak for coon hides I avoid them! Water critters I always wait till end of dec and most times mid jan. Our land season closes jan 31. I hit the water full bore feb 1 its bad my ott /rat line is longer then my yote line.Beaver when ever I find them. I came to grips along time ago our beavers aren't worth waiting on!

Depends on what type of fur is wanted in the market.
Right now the market demands prime fur,or fur coming on to prime.
At one time early flat fox were wanted and sold good.At that time they were making full length coats and the flatter goods were in fashon.
You need to school yourself in all aspects of the fur trade if you want to be an efficient and profitable harvester.

Our season comes in at midnight on November 15th. I'll usually hold off until 6 or 7 am to start laying steel. LoL

Seriously, our season use to come in November 5th, everyone said we needed to wait until November 15th. Now it comes in the 15th and people say wait until Thanksgiving. I've seen years we were shut out by December 10th. I guess if you wait long enough you won't even have to bother setting traps!!!

Season opens Nov. 15 and for coyotes that is likely as good as they will be here, going down hill til about Jan 1 and being rough after that. For cats I wait until Jan to actually target them, they will be best after our season closes, I think, so wait as long as I can. possums, coons, skunks between Thanksgiving and Christmas is usually good.
Prime is a leather side condition and may not be the best for furs, it's controlled by photo period, it is when the full hair/fur growth is reached; but the fur starts to wear as soon as it starts to grow and may be quite worn by the time it is completely prime. Truly animals are only prime about one day a year.
