I mix my cheap dry cat food with molasses and cherry jello or sardines in oil. Make it now and the cat food soaks it all up by season and works great. Jim
Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I have used dry cat and dog food no luck. Wet stuff too . I go back to cut skipjack or shad (free bait.) I start catching coons. But I wanted to find something that dont rot. Arkansas weather has alt of warm days in winter. have you considered grinding it and preserving

I also did really well one year with a cotton ball under the trigger and a shot of fish oil into the cotton ball to soak it up. You can do the same thing with a good coon lure on the cotton ball. Just need to give them a reason to stick their paw into the DP opening to grab the trigger. Jim

Marshmallows 4 me. Sometimes I put them in a ziploc bag with Koolaid powder.
I push one large marshmellow down onto trigger. No lure used. I set right on top of coon trails and heavily tracked areas.
I've tried dry cat food and fish food (dont stay dry very long). Gets mushy, moldy and sour and aggravating to clean out. I would never use any liquid baits such as honey and syrup in my DPs due to the mess it would make. It would get all over my other trapping gear and hands.
I dont run strictly a coon line. I knock the coons back when trapping coyotes, cats, and fox.

I have avoided fish because of the Opossums here. I will say though, if I know coon are walking past my usual bait, I add a fish trailing scent. My favorite bait recipe is 5lb cracked corn, 1 container strawberry lemonade powder mix, 1 jug of cheap maple syrup. I did a batch last week and added black licorice chopped finely in a food processor to compare with the original recipe. Caught 30 coon on that bait alone last year.

Just need to give them a reason to stick their paw into the DP opening to grab the trigger. Jim Did the same using sponge. Some folks don't recommend sponge because the coon may eat it. Using fish oil I never had one eat it though but if concerned your method would also work.
