I picked up a pile of barn fresh No 4's and one old small pan model had this interesting chain rig. The swivel is attached to the base with an old cold shut and 24 links of 4.5 chain attached to the other side with a couple more cold shuts. Surely a trapper modified rig but I haven't seen this type of swivel before. Anyone come across a swivel like this?

Nice finds Dwight....
I have found a few trapper modified chains using that style swivel. I think that was a pretty universal swivel design for early blacksmiths. Later some may have even been factory made..

Thanks Dale, I figured you probably had a pile of them. Looks like it was a pretty old modification.

I don't have my book here, but that's an old stamp.

Looks like you cleaned them up real nice... It's a good feeling to find unexpected markings...
