For the ones that are not welded, how often do you replace the J Hooks on swivels and S Hooks on anchors? I'm not sure about reusing them after a couple seasons with a few catches.

Ya can't miss fur if yur traps are out somewhere.
Or so I've been told.

AS long as they are not opened up and reclosed never.. But always replace with new after they've been opened. I've had yotes open used up a few times, no fun..

Common sense catches alot of fur..
Pay homage to all you harvest..

If i open a J hook, it goes in the metal scrap bucket. I will not run an S hook that has not been welded. They are a lot easier to open than a J hook.

If you're constantly opening hooks to trade out traps and anchors, I would switchover to sleep ez spring hooks and stop the nonsense.

I have come to the conclusion that J hooks are important and cheap so when I need to replace one or change something I get out the bolt cutter and then add a new one.

Sleep EZ, I had never heard of them, looked them up. I'm new back trapping so bare with. DO they replace J or S hooks or both? I am assuming you are saying they are a sound system?

They dont replace the j- or s-hooks but what they do is function as a way to hook traps and anchors/drags/cable tensions together. The advantage of them over quick links or regular spring hooks(carbiners) is that it combines the two. That way way 3 things have to go for your trap to become unattached.

I agree with QBD. Weld all out s hooks and if I open a j hook it gets trashed and I place a new one in, there to cheap to risk it

I am a new trapper (this year) Have yet to set a trap. I will be going for Coyote and Coon as well as some Beaver and Muskrats. I am wondering if it would be worth it to buy Bob Custers Trap Bender and make my own J-Hooks or should I just buy them?20D nails are cheap and the bender is reasonable, I never mind making things. Will they be as strong as the Store bought? I am glad I read this post about always replacing them.

RBSheadache, I wish I had a simple answer for you. I have one of Bob Custer's benders. I enjoy setting at my bench making rivets and swivels etc. The cost of making just a J rivet is not too much less than buying J rivets. The J rivets made from a 20D nail are strong, but I always weld them if used for coyotes. I'm still not convinced one way or the other which is the best way to go.

You can buy 100 J-Hooks for around $12 or a 5lb box of 20d commons for around $13 at Home Depot. So you're not really saving much making your own.. I've made J-Hooks and S-Hooks with the Custer tool - it's a great little tool - but I haven't used them on my coyote traps. You'll also want to get the "Heavy Duty J-Hook Tool."

I was wondering if they would be as strong, don't want to lose one and a trap to boot. It is our Trapping convention here in town this week so I will be stocking up on supplies. Thanks for the comments

I use my tool and then put them in the vise to tighten. It is surprising how much tighter it gets in the vise.

My canine traps also get the J hooks welded.

If in doubt, the welder is used.

I don’t use S hooks and 3/4 of my J hooks are welded.
