I planned on using green walnut hulls in a couple weeks but other than real logwood crystals and sumac berries has anyone used Renno's Organic trap dye?
Anyone know what the ingredient is?

I did a test with one green hull off a black walnut. Put in about a gallon of water in a clear container, water was black within an hour. Outdoor air temp, no added heat. I don't think they need to be turning color. They appear to contain a LOT of tannin.

That is correct, they have all the tannin they're going to have when they fall off the tree.

I have used the leaves of walnut and maple in early summer with better success than blackened hulls. I would imagine the green nuts would be great if you can collect enough.

I throw the entire nut in the dye pot and leave them through out the process. May have to shake out a few nuts when you pull out a dozen traps but so far it seems to be a pretty easy deal .

I step on mine and use just the husk, green or rotten, both work well. Wear gloves.

Well, I finished dyeing traps yesterday. First batch with just green hulls I didn't like. Second batch I left in overnight after bringing to a boil. Better, but still not to my liking. So out of desperation I added a bag of BROWN trap dye. I one hour everything came out minus some rust and completely black. Looks like it reacts with the tannin already there and helps it work quicker.
I have used the logwood crystals before and they work great, but I'd say this combo compares favorably.

I take mine and break the green hull with a hammer and then put in a pillow case and tie shut then throw in the pot.

This is what they looked like going in.

The "Pot". Rain water, walnuts, and sumac. Cold Soaked for 48 hours. [Linked Image]
Pulled from the pot. Drying

Dry - my muskrat dedicated traps. Duke 1.5 weakened springs, Wild River pans, Hagz bracket, 3 feet of chain and extension cable. I have tried to standardize everything and these configurations allow me several different options. Grab and go!

Yes it works fine. Some sort of wood/tree product not sure what. If you're trying to get jet black then Renno's might not do that but that's not why I use trap dye. The purpose is to stop the rust process by letting tannic acid react with the rust the trap. It just happens to turn it black or at least dark brown in the process so we all call it "trap dye".
