I bought some rubber thingies that are suppose to go over the straight metal triggers of many DPs. The problem is, I can’t get them on
1. The hole in the rubber thingy isn’t as wide as the width of the metal triggers
2. The rubber thingy doesn’t bend to make the “corner” that has to be made to put the rubber piece over the trigger

I spoke with Kendall Obermeier, who puts them on his model DP, and he says they go on easy. I must be doing something wrong because I wouldn’t describe getting them on as easy at all.

For those of you who put rubber thingies, or tubes on your DP triggers, how do you get them on?

I use curve nosed locking forceps to put rubber tubing on my DP triggers. It takes a little practice, but I can put one on in about 10 seconds now.

These rubber things are about an inch long and taper from 3/4-inch to about 1/2-inch. They’re probably Erlenmeier flask stoppers with a hole cut in the center for a Pyrex glass tube. Laboratory type stoppers. I haven’t tried heating them though if they’re laboratory grade, heating isn’t going to do much.

What brand of DP are you putting them in?

Ztraps.

Got them from Kendall at the MN Trappers Association convention last weekend. I’m not out much. I have an email in to Kendall but he’s a busy guy. It might be awhile before I hear from him.

Get some flexible rubber tubing 1/2" or less in diameter and about 1" long with a hole approx. 3/16 diameter and they will slip on fairly easy. Those stoppers you have will not bend and are too big in diameter to get lined up with the trigger. You do not need something that large. Just something softer than the steel trigger for the coon or possum to grab hold of.

IIRC, I believe the "point" on the end of the Z triggers is the opposite of the Grizz which I run. I know it took me awhile to figure out what kind/size of tubing would work on the PCS Featherlight DP's and then had to figure out the system to get it on there.

Kendall wrote that they’ve done this with Duke DPs and the stoppers go right on. I had to put a little WD40 on one to slide it on easily on my Dukes. I thing a drop or two of fishoil would work too. Just have to get them to go on the Zs. It may not work with Zs because the trigger angle is lower than on Dukes

i found just adding a small ball of grass in the bottom of my dps helps a lot to. Gives them some thing soft a squishy to grab plus helps keep that sticky bait from fouling up my dps. No trapline is short on grass and a bonus no prep or need to pack it. By chance they get a tiny taste grass is natural

Mark Steck suggests a gob of wool below the trigger. It works but can and is pulled out on a regular basis. Jonesie suggests very stiff polyfill and that’s about the same. Don’t get me wrong, they both work. I’m sure a grass wad would work just fine. Z triggers don’t come up at a high enough angle to allow the placing of any sort of cover on the trigger. There apparently is no need with a push-pull trigger.

Thought I’d try something different. ‘Guess I’ll have to put them on my Dukes and Griz and stick with stiff polyfill in the Zs

Menards stocks surgical tubing, comes in a 3 ft length I think. Cut in 1 inch or so lengths, get some silicone caulk and put some in the piece of tubing. Using a needle nose pliers grab the end of the tubing and it will slide right on. Will come off once in awhile but this is the way to set up DPs.

I have never heard of this DP modification? Could you explain reason/benefit? Any pictures would be greatly appreciated.

I use a small piece of foam under the trigger. Found 3 sheets of 18x18x1" at Walmart for maybe $5. Just cut into squares and give it a shot of fish oil. During hot weather I put a little corn in there and it's good.
