I have trapped a few groundhogs this summer , does the meat make a good bait for K9's ? I use a lot of fresh chunked beaver and deer and thought of mixing all three meats together. Any opinions ? -Thanks

Found this post from March about the same topic. There's some good information in that thread.

it works GREAT
But I'd keep them separate and have 3 different baits, personally.

Meat from groundhogs is right up there with beaver or venison. I'm a big advocate for building your base with a few different meats and giving it extra curiosity and appeal

I see 2 or so in road hit by cars a day. I have to drive thru the bottoms on my way to work. Alot of them around the fields. I will be picking some up to try. I caught 2 last yr in a bobcat set. I threw them to the side. Wont be doing that anymore..

Back in the '80's a fellow by the name of Red Edgemon recommended groundhog or housecat for predator bait. I got some groundhog and Grawe's bait solution and had a real good year (especially for a beginner) on grey fox primarily. East TN didn't have very many coyotes at that time and bobcats were scarce also.

I used this recipe but with snowshoe hare meat. I tell you, it worked wonders. It was tainted, but not rotten. When I bought my first commercial coyote bait a few years later, I opened the jar and took a whiff. I could swear it was the same thing. Last year I bought some bait. Opened the jar, same thing, smelled exactly like the bait I made that time 30 years ago, following a tip from a book my dad had from the 50s. Lol

If I trapped more and snared less, I would be using this method exclusively. Far cheaper than buying the same thing for what a quart jar would cost. Up here bait costs in that 20 dollars for a cup range. So a quart would be worth at least 80 bucks... Amazing how scent stays a memory for so many years!

Give that a shot.

An oldie but still a goodie! That was the method I was taught when I first started in the mid eighties and still make it every year. I buy very little commercial bait.

Back in the day the old house cat bait worked just as well if not better than the groundhog did.
