Does anyone know if there can be a symbiotic relationship between voles and crawdads? Do they use each other’s tunnels? I couldn’t find anything on a google search but it appears to me they are found together often around here in central Illinois.
Thanks,
Dave

Not sure about crawdads but voles will use mole runs.

In my experience, Crawdad holes go straight down to the water table. I can't see that being attractive to a vole, unless they're thirsty.

Or being chased and find a big tunnel to hide in.

So, to be symbiotic, both have to benefit. The vole would have shelter. The crawfish... food from droppings?

Seeing both in the same locations may mean there are abiotic factors (soil types, levels of shade/sunlight, moisture levels, temperature ranges, etc.) that they both find suitable. I’d be curious to know if you notice areas where they do NOT co-reside, but only one of the two is found, and then try to tease out the differences between that location and those where they co-reside. That would make for an interesting informal science experiment.
