Anyone know how far a city skunk will roam from it's den? It depends partly on food availability.

As I understand it, skunks rarely spend 2 days in a row in the same den.

Seem to be a smaller home area as long as food supplies hold out, Around the resorts here, Most stink families stay close from birth to den time. Only Skunks that seem to roam further are the older males. I don't know how long they use a den for, But I've been waiting on a big white stinker that was spooked into his den for three days now.

I have a average circuit of 3 to 5 days for the smaller skunks and a 5 to 7 for the older skunks. I also see where they will stay 2 maybe 3 days then gone for the 3 to 5 or 5 to 7. Females with young for me will be closer to the 3 days once they start to move around then lengthen as the fall comes. Again I have some jobs that it was a revolving door with 7 plus being caught in as many days. This seems to happen more in the less populated areas.

Maybe they don't know skunks can carry rabies.

Seems like they move like raccoons, then and, apparently, city raccoons confine themselves to a few city blocks, not crossing major roads if they can help it. A large hotel with parking lots all around called us because guests had reported seeing a skunk around one of the doors during the night. I arrived in the morning and walked the building perimeter with their maintenance head and we were striking out finding any indicators that the skunk was still around. Except, that is, that we kept catching a whiff of tail at one corner. After scouring the area I finally fanned out and searched beyond the hotel’s property. Lo and behold, I found the skunk, and it hadn’t moved since I had walked onto the hotel property. Namely, because the skunk was as flat as a pancake on the major roadway going past the hotel. These stories are anecdotal, but it demonstrated to me that at least one skunk was willing to cross a major road. Knowing the layout of the area, it also spurred me to conclude that skunks in a commercial area may travel fairly long distances to hit multiple highly condensed treasure troves of food, i.e., dumpsters.

I don't think there is a hard fast rule for skunks.Skunks will stay in a very confined area as long as a food supply lasts, especially in fall when they are putting on fat.I have seen skunks living under a frozen carcass pile in December and come out to eat on it every day, even at 20 below zero. They can also wander a long ways looking for another good food supply when they are done with the one.
