To our New Zealand trapping brothers, could somebody send me the cost of shipping a tanned possum hide to the US? I understand you have an abundance of them and somebody might be willing to sell me one. I think it would be cool to have in our Minnesota Trappers Association fur displays when we do the county fairs.

One of our Grandsons recently returned from a visit to New Zealand. Dang, I wish you'd ask a few weeks ago.

Keep in mind that you will pay a fee,app.$100 when it passes through customs, plus plenty of paperwork.

I've got a stuffed Kiwi animal toy that my DIL brought me back from NZ. It's made with NZ possum fur and it's the softest fur ever. Really neat, their fur is nothing like the ones we are plagued with here.

That sounds like a great option,if it ships from within the US.

What you might consider is an Australian possum, the only difference is cost to you. The brushtail possum was native to Australia and invasive in N.Z.
NZ version cost quite a bit more. On Ebay the NZ is $145 with free shipping- The Aus version is $5.99 + $4.95 S&H

I was in Aus/NZ about 3 years ago. Found out one or the other country was mixing possum fur with wool and saw some products made with it. Nice stuff. If someone with wool blending, carding and weaving skills could do that here, it might give us another outlet for possum fur.

I do recall that it effected the already depressed wool markets in NZ and Australia. That’s not good. But having another outlet for fur is always good.

My week at the MTA county fair booth has been a blast. We’re selling some fur and educating the daylights out of people. We’ve got some Finn coon faces from Central Asia , and a whole Timberwolf hide from the Northwest Territories. People are genuinely interested in hearing about fur use. Having fur from other parts of the world is enlightening too.

I believe the possum wool thing is a NZ deal, they have had several shots at creating uses/markets for their invasives in an effort at control. When you display the Aussie possum just call it a brushtail and have a card that tells how they became a costly invasive in NZ, the people don't have to know how little you paid. A few years ago my son saw a "possum" coat for sale in a airport store or somewhere and was quite impressed, thinking it was Opossum and unaware that Possums existed.
